The streets of the city were dark and dingy, though mercifully quiet and empty, even for this time of night.
He slipped quickly out of a back alleyway and into the side door of a dimly lit tavern. He squinted for a moment as his eyes adjusted to the pale light. He turned his head, seeing who he had come to meet.
The other looked at him, making eye contact, but only for a moment. The dark eyes communicated more than words perhaps could have, and told him all he needed to know.
Settle Inn.
He settled in for a drink, or two. He leaned back against the wood of the booth, worn smooth and polished by the years of traffic it saw. He wanted nothing more than to go to the inn, the one that had become theirs, it seemed, and to the room. If all they had was this night, they best make the most of it. Life was cruel and harsh, there was no truth or knowing when the next secret rendezvous by cover of night would bring them together again. It was not the first time he found himself growing impatient with the other’s love of drink.
He watched as the other left first. He slipped out the back door, disappearing into the night.
He forced himself to wait at least a good ten minutes before he tossed a few coins onto the table and ambling to the front door. He wound around the back ways to the Inn. He climbed the stairs quickly, as not to be followed or noticed and darted into the last room, snatching the single sliver of worn leather from the latch.
“Ye’re in a hurry, love.”
Theodore kissed him hard, pressing his back into the wall. His hands came up to weave through braded and locked hair. He breathed heavily when he broke away, “Oh god… Jack…” He whispered, pressing himself to the pirate.
Jack smiled at him, “I missed ye too, love.” He raised a hand and gently brushed the side of Theodore’s cheek. He kissed him again, laying his other hand on the curve of his shoulder, squeezing and caressing.
Theodore drew back, pulling Jack with him, drawing him towards the bed. He fell heavily down when the bed frame hit the back of his knees, pulling Jack on top of him.
“Easy, love…” Jack whispered huskily against him, coarse beard rubbing and scratching clean-shaven skin, “We’ve got all night.” He
“I missed you so much…” Theodore said breathlessly, kissing him again and again, “I can’t bear it, again… not so much time… I don’t care if it’s dangerous, I won’t go on without you…”
Jack looked down at him, a rare sadness clouting kohl-rimmed eyes. “Ye know I’d do anythin’ fer ye, if ye’d only ask fer it.”
“Oh, Jack…” Theodore drew him close. “Jack…” He kissed his cheek, his jaw, his temple. “How do you survive… I nearly die every time you leave…”
“I don’. I miss ye just as much as ye miss ol’ Jack. Ye know it. E’ery day I think o’ coming back to ye.”
Theodore’s hand came up to clutch strong shoulders. “Please don’t be foolish… I’d rather you be far away from me and safe, than in harm’s way… I couldn’t-”
“Hush, Teddy. “Ye’re talkin’ too much, as usual.” Jack shushed him, hands sliding down his sides, then up his chest, working slowly and teasingly at the buttons on his shirt. He traced light outlines with his fingertips against the pale stretches of skin, drawn tight and firm over battle-hardened muscles.
“It’s been too long…” Theodore murmured, eyes closed and mouth slightly open as he lost himself completely in the moment and the touches.
“It won’t happen again, love…” Jack’s rich, deep voice murmured into his ear.
