I had a friend (we've lost touch) who bought an old guest house in Weston-Super-Mare for precisely that reason. In fact we took on our house knowing there would be spare space. Over the 7 years we've lived there its filled up and there's now four of us in the house so when we finally move we're going to have to find somewhere bigger.
As for the "standard" questions. I was pretty ambivalent about my genitals (although I hated erections) and I was about my gender until I went to an all boys school at which point I realised I wasn't a boy. That was hell. But it was also the event that prompted me to research and find out what I needed to know.
