I wandered down town to do the shopping I didn't do on Saturday. The reason for that being that I'd gone to Chester for the Saturday session of Eastercon.

Anyway, As I was walking home, I go to cross the road, and a voice pipes up:
"Excuse me", she says.
I stop to see what is wanted.
"You must wait until the green man is showing", she continues

She's wrong anyway - nothing to stop you crossing the road where- or when-ever you want (save for motorways, etc) so far as I know. Scares the pants of merkins when they first see it... :-)

Clearly it's *safer* if the green man is lit - because then you *probably* don't have to worry about traffic.
