I've generally found that when you meet mixed groups out walking the people of the same sex say hello only. When I'm walking alone this is even more pronounced than in groups. Women have told me I'm "brave" for walking alone by the canal before though.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - people are very odd. I always pass the time of day with people I meet when I'm out walking: it's only polite, innit. Mostly, they respond in like vein. People walking dogs tend to be the most friendly; groups of people tend to be the ones who'll ignore me. Yes, people are odd.
Dog walkers can be very outward going. I suppose you have to be when you have a critter whose goal in life seems to be to totally embarrass you, IME.
Most of the time I'm out on the canal or nature park I'm armed with photographic gear, so that can also spark a few conversations.
I have spent the last 30 years roaming the countryside alone, so no matter what else changes in my life it's not something I feel will change. Yes it would be nice at times to have company on one of my walks.
I'll be honest, in that if I had to rely on being accompanied, I'd never be able to go anywhere, and that just plain would not work for me.
Sounds good to me. It's going to be a very sad day when women can't do things on their own just because they're women. I'll drive out on a nice sunny day and burn off some rubber because that's what I like doing. I'll call in at a snack van in a layby somewhere for a cuppa and pass the time of day with anyone who happens to be around. Company is good at times, but it's also good to be able to have time to myself when I'm the only person who needs to be considered.
I know several ladies of all ages who happily walk on their own. One or two have even done the Great Outdoors Challenge of walking from one side of Scotland to t'other, backpacking or B'n'B-ing on the way. I don't reckon you're particularly unusual - but of course it could be that I only know the strangest of people. Takes one to know one, I guess ;)
