Dear Mother,

Calling me son is more than a little distressing...

gender, family

I hate that, esp when they should know. I try to cut them slack because it's hard for them to erase all the programming... but it doesn't make it less distressing. Sigh.

Oops. Mind you... I have frequently been known to say things like (to K) "leave your sister alone" or (to D) "Leave your brother alone" when it should be the other way around - or refer to D as "she" or K as "he" - it's a mum thing. D gets really upset when I call him Kat.

Having said that, I do remember the problems you've had with your mum accepting things. I'm just saying that it's probably not deliberate considering the work you've both put in to re-building your relationship.

I don't think it was deliberate, as she did apologise during the second phone call to her. But as it was the parting word at the end of the first short call, did cause me to cringe more than a little.

I guess old habits die hard?

I still don't know how I'd react were it my own son becoming another daughter. I rather hope I don't have to find out, because I should think it must be very difficult for a parent to accept such major changes in one's offspring. Have some {{{{{hugs}}}}} and try not to feel bad about your mother's lapse.

Oh yes, definitely. I'm well known for telling off the wrong child and for getting their names and genders muddled up. Perhaps it's a middle aged mum thing :)

I know what that feels like, hopefully she'll manage to change. [hugs]
