I love how you describe the war: the cause of everything that had happened between them - perhaps, especially, because you leave the details to the reader's imagination.
It's beautiful and heartbreaking how they find so much peace and contentment in those few final moments, just holding each other, before marching off to the battles we can't be sure they'll return from.

because you leave the details to the reader's imagination. This is something that I found that I do more often than I mean to when it comes to the boys. There's just so much that can happen between them, with so many possible outcomes, and I've never felt exactly right explaining it in detail. That being said, I'm really glad you liked the effect that the ambiguity gave the description.
