Cleo from 5 to 7 (1961) and Vagabond (1985)

Since I live in LA I've decided that I should actually try to take advantage of the film stuff here and yesterday I went to a double show of two Agnes Varda films, Cleo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond, at the Aero Theatre. Agnes Varda was actually, there, too, and she spoke between the films (not bad for 11 bucks!)

Vagabond sounds like a film a friend of mine went to see recently called Wendy & Lucy, starring Michelle Williams:

I've heard of that movie and it looks good, but I don't think I can ever watch it. I'm one of those silly people who can't deal with bad things happening to dogs in movies.

I completely agree, and that's the main reason I didn't go with her (although I'm not sure anything bad DOES happen to the dog ... but I didn't even want to ask!). I think filmmakers who wring emotion from the viewer as a result of the death of or injury to (or just the dreaded expectation of death of or injury to) an animal are lazy and sinister storytellers. I have no problem with human movie characters being blown to kingdom come, but animals? I just can't handle it.

I agree! Even if someone told me the movie ended well, I still couldn't handle her and the dog being separated, having the dog be in the pound, etc.
