I'm really shocked here - I've just had some awful news from my sister - she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I really don't know how to help her here, have any of you had any experience with this in any way? She's worrying about telling her youngest son because he sits his degree finals over the next fortnight and she doesn't want him to ( Read more... )

Oh god, Ali, I'm so sorry to hear that :-(

My younger brother had cancer of the kidney a year and a half ago, so I understand how you must be feeling. He lost the kidney, but is doing fine now - there were no secondaries, and he required minimal follow up. Plus, my friend Margaret (who is practically a mother to me) had breast cancer about eight or nine years ago. She didn't lose the breast - just had a lumpectomy plus, IIRC, lost the lymph gland on that side. She had radiation therapy rather than chemo, and has made a good recovery (although she is prone to skin infections in that area).

If you need to chat, hon, give me a call. I'm no expert, but I know what it feels like to watch people you care about going through it :-(

::massive hugs::

Thanks for that Bev, they seem to have caught it early so I'm really hoping that a lumoectomy and radiation will be enough to sort it - it'll be enough to go through in itself, I really hope she doesn't need chemo.

Oh, Ali, I'm so sorry. I hope everything goes well with it.

At least now they know what it is, they're prepared to move quickly in dealing with it. Speed helps.

I wish there was more I could do, but I'm sending all the good vibes I can you and your sister's way. ::hugs::

I'm so sorry to hear it. It's very positive when they catch it early.

IMHO, they should probably tell the older brother. He wouldn't want to be left out of this. There's probably enough time so that he can be over the worst of the shock before finals. But that's just my 2 cents

Sends big hugs and good thoughts your way.

I've been through that with a close friend. If you ever want to vent, I'm here. *hugs*
