So I finally got a teaching job. And it's probably the best possible teaching job I could have gotten. And I could go into explaining all that, which might be a much more interesting topic for my readership. Or will they simply think I'm a bigger bitch (and perhaps a bit of a hypocrite) when I give them hard assignments I could probably not presently complete?

Screw that. You got a degree, what most of them couldn't do at this point. ;)

Right. I know that. You know that. I can read these books in a handful of days and get more out of them than they can studying them for a month because I have been trained to do so in a way they have not.

But students often forget these things--in their highly self-centered world they are very much more brilliant than anyone else (consider how many teens feel about their parents). And, particularly in English where many things are subjective, I think they feel an ability to read well and analyze well is not a skill they can build, but a God-given talent. You either have it or you don't. This is what I worry about.

Wow, that's a really involved response for something that was probably flippant encouragement ^.^; Can you tell this is important to me?

Honesty seems to be the best policy, not only because we're modeling appropriate behavior and all that manure, but because if you try to pull the wool on them, they will see through it. Just admit that you got into town on short notice and that you're having to refresh your memory as you go. ;) Be human.

As for being better than most, screw that policy. Don't try to be like them; let them try to be like you. Take each day as it comes, fight each battle as it presents itself, and keep on the lookout for ways to improve.

Oh, and groupwork. Lots of groupwork.
