What makes Eridan fans see him as self sacrificing?

Doing that fandom meme got me thinking about whether there are any topics I avoid purely due to self consciousness about lack of interest, and I realised pure Homestuck meta is about it. So here's something I decided not to post as a reply to someone else's meta on tumblr in case it came out too squee harshing.
Got a bit tl;dr for such a simple question )

homestuck, meta

Yeah you're absolutely, canonically right and they are absolutely, canonically wrong. The thing about joining Jack? He was doing that to save his own skin. He wanted to bring Feferi with him but when she said no, he didn't back down. His life clearly meant more to him than hers in that moment, even before it got to the part where he murdered her. Nor has was there any instance of him making a significant sacrifice for her or anyone else before that. It drives me nuts, because it really feels like they just completely made this thing up to justify their love of him.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind so much were it not for the common implication that Feferi relied on him significantly and was (consciously or not) taking advantage of Eridan's self sacrificing nature and love for her during their moirailship. That's the exact opposite of what I saw in canon.
