that bit is true. consumer society is defined primarily by freedom of choice- but choice of facet within monoculture. and monoculture (pop culture and its affiliates) is basically the bread and puppets to distract from or soothe the wounds of annihilating banality that is our modern global class system.
but like you say, we first have to chose to be humiliated.

that's also pretty true. self-evidently. the reasons why defining one's personality in reference to the character's of others is pretty self-depreciating, and will obviously lead to lack of personal substance.

'humiliation' in this context would be some kind of public show of coercion. wearing a degrading uniform or doing something you wouldn't normally do that would make the hypothetical 'we' personally feel like shit ( ... )
