Yesterday evening I had another letter back from a literary agent about Eloise. There are still two to come, by my reckoning. This one gave me pause, and made me wonder whether I'm right to throw away all hope yet ( Read more... )

I think the "we'll see" is a healthy attitue to take. As you have publication in sight, then I think it might help to try something a little more conventional this summer, to start with-- once you've worked out how to relate to the subject, your own unique touches will come, and your 'spin' on it will grow. Personally, I find that I can't work out my take on a story and all the ins and outs of the plots until I've thrown myself in to the story and characters a little-- probably by writing a few chapters that I won't keep, but it pays off.

Having said this, I do have rather a mangled approach to beginning novels, so perhaps I'm not the best person to listen to. Anyway, methinks this is something interesting to discuss the next time we meet.
