I think the "we'll see" is a healthy attitue to take. As you have publication in sight, then I think it might help to try something a little more conventional this summer, to start with-- once you've worked out how to relate to the subject, your own unique touches will come, and your 'spin' on it will grow. Personally, I find that I can't work out my take on a story and all the ins and outs of the plots until I've thrown myself in to the story and characters a little-- probably by writing a few chapters that I won't keep, but it pays off.
Having said this, I do have rather a mangled approach to beginning novels, so perhaps I'm not the best person to listen to. Anyway, methinks this is something interesting to discuss the next time we meet.
