I was going to post something here yesterday, but I was distracted by a letter from my brother. That's right, the boy has finally managed to send me something - plans to send him a s.a.e. are on hold and instead I've replied to him at length

It's funny how we see suffering as a kind of competition -- 'I've suffered more than you so you're being trivial' or 'You've suffered more than me so I'm being trivial'.

I think that, since pain is so subjective, everyone's feeling of pain is valid and worth the sympathy of others. The human psyche doesn't seem to judge negative emotions on a sliding, objective scale. For me, at least, I'm either bouncy or morose, because my body can't seem to stir up anything between those two. No matter how great or 'trivial' the cause, pain is felt and should be listened to.
