No, wait; hear me out. Really, I haven't lost my mind yet.

His adulterous ways (one would assume, his past adulterous ways) don't matter (and hey; isn't that a familiar refrain for Democrats in presidential race discussions?).

I have believed for a while that he's sort of sold his soul to run the campaign his advisors told him he needed to run. For me, the choice of Sarah Palin (blatant political pandering) above his true choice of either Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge (both of whom would have at least been more reasonable choices) showed that.

Maybe he just still retains enough shreds of decency to not want an assassination on his hands.

(I have seen no evidence that the same is true of Palin.)

I have always maintained that John McCain's biggest problem is that he is a good soldier that does what he is told.
Personally he seems to be, as both you and Alyce point out, an OK joe, and not an adherent of the political maneuvering that the Republican Machine is so ruthlessly fond of.
Nonetheless, he does as they direct him. Heartbreaking.
