You know, it's getting really hard to remember that there was once a time wasn't enthused at all about Dollhouse. Why is it getting so damn good right before the series ends?
Oooh, you really should catch up. They had six episodes over three weeks in December, so it sped up the pacing like whoa.
I'm sad they canceled too, but I guess at least they gave the producers time to give the series a proper ending instead of just cutting off in the middle somewhere.
HOLY SHIT GUYS! BOYD?!?! CURSE YOU JOSS AND YOUR EVIL CLIFFHANGER OF DOOM!
I'm still not entirely convinced there isn't more to it. I don't hate the twist, I think it's brilliant, but some things still don't make sense. As some people at TWOP have pointed out, he saved Echo and Adele's backs way too often, even shooting a commando. OTOH, if he's truly evil, would he really have cared about shooting one person in the name of doing what had to be done?
, but that scene with Boyd and Claire when he's packing up to go on the run? It's from Epitaph One!
I thought that might have been it!
Why is it getting so damn good right before the series ends? That's how I felt about Firefly, even though that was only a few episodes - especially with the movie. I think the problem is that Joss likes dragging his feet towards the point of the shows he makes, and television, Fox or not, doesn't have that sort of patience. I think as cheesy as people say the first Buffy season was, that's probably what saved the show. I don't think Buffy got truly dark

There definitely has to be. The fact that he's protected Echo and Adelle implies that he needs something from him... the deception implies it's something nefarious. BUT WHAT?
I'm actually just starting season two of Buffy, so I guess I'll get to see the getting-darker progression myself. I only saw Firefly on DVD, but I remember reading the air dates and wondering how they thought the order of episodes would make sense.
From what I understand Fox meddled a bit with the beginning of Dollhouse, which I think probably hurt the show. Dollhouse already had a darker, more complex initial concept than Buffy or Firefly... but at the beginning all we had was FBI agent unsuccessfully tries to uncover underground mind-control-prostitution ring, which is not the show at all.

Sorry, I thought you were further along. You'll definitely see how it gets darker - glad I didn't spoil you for it! It gets even more dark in season five and six, but we'll discuss that when you get there. ;)

Of course, I've heard contradictory things on that - some sources suggest that it was Fox, while others seem to suggest it was, in fact, Joss Whedon's idea

I'm definitely enjoying what I've seen so far. And with Buffy I'm not super worried about spoilers, because I've seen some later episodes already and picked up other things along the way from friends or the media. It's still fun to see how everything develops even if I already know the answers to things like, "hey, Buffy didn't have a sister before, did she?"
