This is now so common in the US that normally it isn't newsworthy, but the shooting at the Pulse nightclub made the headlines for making the triple achievement, a declared act of terrorism, directly

Just so. *sigh* The NRA's proven to be about the most successful industry lobby group next to Big Oil. I've no problems with people enjoying shooting as a hobby, but when it becomes a sacred cow to revere above all else, extolling the utility of automatic weaponry in the home - no, that's going way too far.

And yes, when those Sky News folk tried to deflect the motivation away from being homophobia, for which the killer felt himself to be God's Instrument of Retribution™ - well, good on the journo for walking out.

The horrific thing is, of course, that none of the fundies or their political agents (the sponsors of HB2, for instance) accept their role in this - you simply don't get to stoke these fires of bigotry endlessly without having some people taking you up on the need for a mission to cleanse the world of That Kind.

I love when folks start questioning American sanity in a broad ad hominem fashion. (not saying you are, but lots of Europeans do) Especially given their own continent's track record of violence, corruption, and human rights abuse. We're a young nation still working out the kinks. You've been around how long? How's that utopian ideal working out?

We are at the start of the century the great SF authors (modern day sages if ever there were any) have predicted to be of great strife and upheaval. Its gonna suck. Wars breaking out every time someone even looks at their neighbor funny. Dwindling resources. Political and social upheaval. Toppling of nations.

Folk are folk. Life will never be perfect. It'll stay really shitty until we leave this mudball and spread our conflicting ideologies far apart from each other. Absence makes the heart grow fonder after all.
