It took me a while to like them. I didn't "get" them at first since they just played simple, dirty rock songs.
But then I started to listen to Lou Reed's lyrics, got a feel for their whole approach towards music, and their general attitude. The music started to sound like it fit perfectly (which it did on their first couple of albums). Urban, neurotic, and generally focused on NYC subcultures. Pretty different from the music out west at the time.
Lou Reed is a genius. And to an extent, John Cale is, as well.
yeah, they are very sloppy, very dirty, but some of the most emotional rock i have ever heard. just listen to venus in firs. that single note hit on the violin over and over again.. something about it. it just sets me on fire. or the song heroin. lou reed's lyrics are really what carry that song. in my opinion, rock and roll hit a crescendo, or a climax in the 60's, and the velvet underground are simply the product of human social and musical evolution working perfectly.
Venus in Furs is by far my favorite song by them. They loved Heroin too. Separately, i don't find Cale and Reed great, like my father thinks, but when they broke apart both of their music streams seemed to go down two different paths.
