I actually did not like Russell in this. His singing sounded so forced, like it was always above his range, even though it wasn't, and I found this so distracting that I couldn't be interested in his character at all, even though I think he portrayed the role itself well. And then that horrible thunk-splat sound his body made when he jumped, oh man, even now, when I think of him, that's all I hear.
Totally agreed on Hugh, however! And Samantha Barks, who not only sang wonderfully but gosh, she is lovely. I'd never heard of her before. also, Anne Hathaway made me cry rivers! I've never been a fan of hers, but she's brought me around.
Take me right, I don't think Russell is quite ready for Bolshoi theatre yet, but I dunno.. I liked him. That sound the body made? That was so sad and indeed put me off the whole idea of suicide of drowning for ever! :D
I still don't quite get it why Javier had to kill himself. IMHO the 2.5 hours were too short to explain what was going on in his head well. And I don't remember him well in the book - he never grabbed my attention prior to Russell Crowe.
Samantha is a gem. My daughter and I adore her song, the one about raining.
And yes, Anne was good! I had an irrational dislike towards her and her performance turned me around completely. But poor Fontina.. so sad.
I must say I was impressed. Yes, I am fair! I disliked her so so much prior to the film (for some reason I also thought she was going to play Cosette :D) but she was good. Here - I am fair when it is due. My daughter was weeping all the way during Hathaway scenes and now she is running around singing "I dream a dream" (or whatever that song is).
