Janus looks around to see if there is anyone else who might have come from some other place, like the rest of the group has.

Some of the people in the tavern look like they've been on the road for quite a while, but nobody looks too surprised to be there.

Spectre approaches the bar and hails the barman. "Sir, we need a glass of water, a glass of port, and a large slice of bread." Spectre has seen a poultice made once before, for a human soldier with an infected leg, and he recalled that it involved bread. Uncertain, he glances back over his shoulder at Janus, who is obviously distracted by the crowd. "Does that sound right to you, Janus?"

Breaking from his appraisal of the crowd Janus replies, "Bread would work for a smaller wound but this poultice needs to be spread across all of the petrified skin. A large bowl of porridge would work best. Although I don't think port will be strong enough for an infusion."

Yes, it does seem to you that this will call for something stronger and purer than fortified wine, and that a large quantity of porridge would make an ideal medium for spreading the infusion and drawing the curse's poison out of the stone.

Spectre turns back to the bar. "Sir," he addresses the barman. "Forget the bread. Could we have a large bowl of porridge? Further, do you have anything stronger than port? A supply of pure alcohol for medicinal purposes?"

"Got trollgut," the bartender says. "It'll cure what it don't kill, and make ya to forget any other ill. You'll have to wait a bit on the porridge."

Harlan half nods and half bows his gratitude towards Janus and Spectre and then gets to work mixing the ingredients for the poultice.

DM Fudgery: Harlan's "Take 10" = 18 + 2 from Janus's assistance = 20. alexandraerin August 18 2010, 20:46:48 UTC
It's a bit different from anything you have experience with, and the feathers are not in the best condition but with Janus seeing you through the difficult parts you are able to combine an extraction of the feathers into a gooey, foul-smelling preparation over the course of half an hour or so.

Will it work? Only time will tell, but the earthenware bowl you used to mix it in seems slightly softer.

As he waits for the poultice to be prepared, Spectre entertains himself by barraging the staff with questions.

"What is the name of this establishment?"

"How many years have you been operating this inn?"

"How often does the scenery outside the inn change suddenly?"

"Is this inn enchanted?"

"I dunno, it's just... the tavern," the half-elven girl says without breaking stride when you ask her the name of the establishment.

"Oh... most of 'em, most of 'em," the barman says, scratching his scraggly beard says when you put the question to him about how many years he's been operating the inn. "'ceptin' for when I weren't." Your attempts to reword the question are met with similarly unhelpful answers: "Ever since I started," for instance, when you ask him how long he's been tending bar here. He tells you that he can't really see the windows from where he's standing when you ask him about the scenery outside.

The half-elven girl looks at you like you're crazy and her brother says, "It's called Spring. DuhYou catch sight of the grown barmaid watching you and you put the question to her about the inn's enchantment. She looks you up and down ( ... )
