Summary: Alex is home...
Alex walked up the steps to the precinct, her heart in her throat. She paused at the door, taking a slow deep breath and, mustering her courage, pulled the door open. Her heels echoed on the tile as she walked down the hallway. She straightened her skirt and, taking one more deep breath, turned the corner into the Special Victims Unit. The room was buzzing with activity, just as she remembered. She glanced around, pausing and observing, as seconds beat in slow motion.
Blue eyes passed over a room that seemed frozen in time. There was still a block of wood under the leg of Munch’s perpetually wobbly desk. Still the same posters on the walls. Elliot leaned against Fin’s desk, gesturing with a manila folder as Fin leaned back in his chair, nodding as Elliot spoke. Cragen’s door was half open, Alex tipped her head to see if he was in his office.
So many things the same and yet the whole building felt…different. Casey sauntered in, spied Elliot and Fin and stormed over to them, her green eyes bright as she dropped her briefcase on the floor next to Elliot's desk. Fin chuckled lightly at something Casey said and the woman smiled, hand coming up to touch her lightened hair.
Alex observed in silence, the metaphorical fly on the wall. Her eyes moved past Casey in the directions of Cragen's door, noting again the half open door. Suddenly the door opened the rest of the way and out stepped a leggy brunette that she didn't recognize. Her hair was just shy of shoulder length and she was dressed in a sleek a-line black gown and heels, making her just that much taller. As the woman turned around Alex heard a voice she hadn't heard in over a year.
Olivia.
She stared, not being able to help herself, the corners of her mouth turned up in that cocky smile she'd been known for. She took a step forward and then another, finally being seen, not only by Olivia but by Casey, Elliot and Fin, all at the same time.
"Alex," Olivia stopped in her tracks and matched the blonde stare for stare. The room was frozen again.
"Hi," Alex smiled awkwardly, "I'm back," she said it as a question, as though she needed justification to explain her presence. The blonde's voice was suddenly shaky at the heavy silence that seemed to weigh down the room. No one seemed to know how to respond. Alex never broke her gaze, as she looked directly at Olivia, who stared back.
Finally Olivia found her voice, "When did you get back?" She couldn't take her eyes off of Alex's cerulean blue ones. It seemed like forever since she'd looked into their depths.
"A couple of days ago. I've been set up with an apartment, and a job, but I wanted to see you…guys," Alex said the last word almost an afterthought. Her eyes still hadn't left Olivia’s.
Olivia swallowed, unconsciously brushing her hands over her dress. She took a step towards Alex, “I’ve missed you so much.”
A tiny half smile rose on Alex’s lips, “I missed you too, Olivia.”
Olivia? Are you ready?" the voice came from behind Alex.
Olivia's eyes broke away from the ocean of blue, the infinite moment shattering like glass.
"I've got cab waiting outside, we need to go now if we're going to make our reservation," The deep timbre of male voice reverberated in Olivia's direction, and the energy in the room shifted in a moment from serene to awkward. Olivia stammered.
"Oh…Hi Joe, yeah, I'm ready," Olivia's olive skin suddenly turned three shades of pink. She stepped over to her desk and grabbed a small clutch. As she moved toward the new arrival, who was now standing next to Alex, Olivia's complete loss for words was painfully evident. "Alex, this is Joe. Joe, this is Alex," she seemed to run the words together in an uncomfortable stream.
It only took Alex a moment to connect the dots. She observed Joe. He was tall, attractive, with curly dark hair, a roman nose and chiseled features. Dressed in a dark suit and a deep red silk tie, he was the picture of suave and Alex noticed that he and Olivia looked very ….what was the word….
Together.
Joe placed a hand on the small of Olivia’s back, confirming Alex’s suspicion. Alex threw Elliot a panicked glance and Elliot stepped forward, “Alex! You know, we were having some trouble with this case and we’d appreciate your input…”
Alex followed Elliot over to his desk, casting a stunned look to the departing backs of Olivia and her boyfriend.
“Elliot?” she managed, swallowing hard against the swell of emotion threatening her.
“It’s new,” Elliot said, “Olivia and Joe. She waited, Alex. But she thought…”
Alex held up her hand, “It’s okay, Elliot. Olivia doesn’t owe me anything. I need to get back to work,” Alex felt the need for a hasty exit, as the walls of the precinct began to close in on her, “It was good to see you again.”
Elliot watched as Alex walked gracefully from the squad room, “How are you gonna fix this one, Liv?” he mumbled, sinking into his chair and opening a file.
