The 1-6, part 3
My first night back was perfect. We talked for hours, you told me how you saved that little girl's life and how you almost got yourself arrested by the guys from homeland security. I yelled at you for that. You confided in me how scared you were when Elliot and Munch got shot and how afraid you were last year when Casey was beaten. I started to tear up when you looked at me with a devastated expression and said you had forgotten how blue my eyes really were. I sobbed out that I loved you. You held me. You kissed my neck. Oh God, I love it when you kiss my neck.
You made love to me. Always one for chivalry, you took your time, showing me how deeply you loved me. Then came the tickle fight. What is it with you and tickle fights? I mean seriously, how old are you again?
We lay there in your bed, your head resting on my shoulder, my hand playing with your fingers. I told you how I taught at a local middle school in the middle of the desert. I had to shush your laughter. I thought you were going to wake the neighbors with your outburst, not to mention the nine year-old boy asleep in the next room. The idea of me teaching thirteen year-olds isn’t that funny, well maybe it is. You teased me, asking if I had lost all of the government's money in Las Vegas. I shot back that of course I had, there is no better lesson for a 9 year-old than "how to lose your life savings at the poker tables".
I told you about Antonio and how I fought Hammond tooth and nail. I wanted him to be in a proper home; not with a broken, 32 year-old, single woman. He finally said either Antonio went with me, or into the foster care system of some yet-to-be-named state. I relented.
You turned your head to look up at me. You had always advocated that I had a maternal side buried deep within me somewhere. "Why did you keep him? He could have gone back to his aunt after you were let out of the program?"
"Because I fell in love with him."
You settle back down in your original position, but I can imagine the cocky smirk that crosses your face, "I told you so."
I just rolled my eyes. Some things never change.
