Bike prices in the big city and other stuff

Okay, can anyone explain to me why a bike I could've gotten in Iowa for $30 is $150 here in Portland? And Chrissy says in New York it'd be even worse. WTF? Yeah, demand may be high, but for God's sake, they can make about a million of those things in two days. So what's with the price hike ( Read more... )

I don't think there's *anywhere* you can get a new bike for $30.

Used, maybe.

I meant used. I should have said so. But seriously... in Iowa you'd have to be insane to buy a used bike for $150. Now here in Portland, it's the cheapest adult used bike you can get.

You have to realize there's a much bigger market. Also, how many folks back where you lived used a bike for commuting?

You might find cheaper bikes at Goodwill or the like.

And you should ask on freecycleportland.
