This reminds me of the Futurama episode with Bender in space..and a wee civilization growing on him.

Also, the Simpsons ep where Lisa grows a civilization by dissolving a tooth in cola for a science project.

I love how earnest Ianto is about his little jam jar people. And I can totally see him doing this.
