Title: If You Were I
Author: alex_caligari
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose
Rating: G
Summary: A blonde, an explosion, and a leather jacket. Not necessarily in that order.
Disclaimer: The puppets are still firmly attached to the strings of the BBC.
Author's Notes: I didn't mean to do this, I really didn't. But as soon as I saw the prompt at the doctor_rose_fix-athon, I had to do it. The prompt was put forward by ladyprydian who asked to "Take an episode of your choice and write it as if Rose was the last of the Time Lords and the Doctor was her human companion." No beta, so all mistakes are mine.

“I didn’t catch your name,” she said, hardly winded after our mad sprint.

“John,” I gasped, “John Tyler.”

She smirked. “A man with two first names. I like it. ‘John, look out!’ ‘Tyler, run!’ It works on so many levels.”

I looked at her, a slight woman with a strange tint to her blonde hair. She was grinning madly. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name either.”

“Right! Introductions.” She stuck out her hand. “I’m the Doctor.”

“Good to meet you,” I said, shaking her hand. “So, uh, what was that we were running from? Because it looked like...”

“Shop dummies. Plastic shop window dummies that suddenly came to life and started chasing after us. Is that what it looked like?”

Feeling foolish, I answered, “Yes.”

“Good. ‘Cause that’s exactly what it was. Nice coat, by the way.”

I automatically glanced down at the leather jacket, smelling slightly charred from the explosion. “Thanks,” I muttered. I looked up to see her already walking away down the alley. “Hey, wait!”

She glanced back but kept walking. “Yeah?”

I caught up to her and matched her pace. I was suddenly at a loss for words. Like an idiot, I said the first thing that came to mind. “Will I see you again?”

She flashed that smile at me, and if she wasn’t clearly half-mad I probably would have already asked her out for a drink. “If you’re lucky. I’m very unique. Won’t find anything else like me.”

“I believe that.”

“No, but really.” She stopped and looked at me, really stared at me, and her smile was gone. “I’m the only one left. I’m the only one who can still feel it.” She grabbed my hand, and I jumped at the sudden contact.

“How can you stand it?” she asked. “Walking around with all these hearts beating around you, ticking away. So lonely, some of them, and they don’t even know why. All they want is a hand to hold and if they let go...” She dropped my hand.

I stood breathless, waiting.

She looked down and started to slowly walk away. “Find that hand to hold, John Tyler. Don’t forget that.” She turned around a corner and by the time I reached it, she was gone.
