Disgusting and amazing at the same time

I ate McDonald's yesterday.

I justified it by telling myself it was "all I ate today" so that was OK. (It was pretty much, although I also had 2 cups of coffee and 1 beer.)

Um, yeah. 2,600 calories later. (Oh yeah, not to mention 6,100 mg of sodium -- and I wondered why I had such a headache....)

So, one meal at McDonald's -- albeit a large one ( Read more... )

The main thing with McD or any fast food is portion size. Get only SMALL items. A cheeseburger and small fries is less than 600 calories and under a 1000 mg sodium. Not great, but much better than the numbers you quoted.

Next, consciously slow down to enjoy the bad for you treat. If you wolf the burger, you will want another. If you eat it slowly and drink plenty of water or diet soda, your stomach will realize that you just ate 600 calories of mostly fat and chill out.

If I am starving when I hit a fast food joint it is very hard not to order (and devour) a 10,000 calorie meal. What I found works best is to be prepared. Go to the website and pick a std meal you can order automatically. That way, if you cave and go, you won't be as susceptible to the urge to order a double quarter pounder with cheese (740), large fries (500) and a shake (770) for just over 2000 calories.

I go to the grocery store, buy the most expensive and lean ground meat I can find (usually buffalo, cuz it's leanest), buy a small pack of buns, all the fixin's, and a sack of potatoes. I go home and fry up my own damn burger, made exactly how I want it, with oven roasted fries which have very little fat. (or if you have a deep fryer, go for it.)

By the time I'm done, I've got a fantastic burger for about 800 calories, I got to eat it while it was fresh and hot, in front of my computer or TV, or even in the bathtub.....and I can have another one tomorrow.

Go watch 'Supersize Me'. You'll never eat McD's again.

Have you seen "Super Size Me"? It will definitely encourage you to curtail your indulgences there. (I used to miss the mini-cheeseburgers when I became a vegetarian. Then I realized that those flavores were created in a lab. Ew.)
