~*~*~

There’s a voicemail on his cell phone when he gets out of the shower. Sam frowns and looks around. Apparently Dean went out. Nice of him to leave a note. Hopefully the voicemail isn’t him saying that he’s in trouble, because Sam just showered and he really doesn’t want to go out and get sweaty, dirty, sticky, or bloody again today, thanks very much.

He grabs the little piece of plastic and holds it to his ear as he finishes toweling off with one hand, the water from his hair leaking in now-cold drops down the side of his face. There’s a moment where the phone slips as he tries to wipe away the drops, but he gets it back to his ear in time to hear the message begin.

He nearly drops the phone entirely when he hears who called.

Hey, man. It’s Alec. You know, I noticed that John doesn’t really call you guys to check in. Not sure if that’s how it works in this family, but whatever. I’m not used to it, so just tell me to fuck off if you don’t want me calling. But it’s been a couple of weeks. So I got your number off his phone while he was sleeping. Though I’d let you know that we’re - he’s - okay. Ran into this… were-cat-thing… the other night. He was one mean sonofabitch. Right, well. Your dad’s fine, just wanted to let you know.

The message is over for a full minute - time enough for the voicemail options to cycle through once, twice, then a third - before Sam can shake himself out of his shock enough to hang up. Even then, he just sort of stands there, staring at the phone in his hand.

Then it hits him.

His ”little brother” just called him to check in.

Sam grins and nods to himself, scrolling through his missed call log to see what the number was. Not Dad’s cell phone, then. A different number altogether, which means it must be Alec’s. He thinks about calling Alec back, but shelves the idea just as quickly. If Alec was willing to check in, the last thing Sam wants is for Dad to know about it. Once he found out, he’d try to convince Alec of all the reasons it was the wrong thing to do.

Reasons Sam has never believed in and can’t imagine that he ever will.

He’s still grinning as his thumb moves over the keypad, typing out a short text message.

Thanks. We’re ok, too. Keep in touch.
