It really is hard to make new friends as you get older… That's a problem I have a lot here. A book club sounds like a really good way to do it, though!
That's great that you made some new friends! I find that making new friends get more difficult the older I get, and I could definitely use some new friends since I have no friends in the city where I live (my friends all live elsewhere). But it's not easy!
