Oh man, I'm horrible at this, because I grew up in the bit nobody ever wants to visit and my experience with downtown is pretty much office building food courts (state of Illinois building has a good one
( ... )
We have awesome beaches! Oak Street is probably the best. Indie Cafe on N Broadway is good for Japanese food and Reza's on West Ontario is one of my favorite spots for Middle Easter cuisine. If it were a week later I'd suggest the Taste of Chicago.
For shopping you pretty much have to hit the Magnificent Mile - Sephora, White House|Black Market, the Lego Store, Tiffany's, Betsy Johnson, Candyality (omg Muggle Honeyduke's).
Also - Navy Pier. (I was just thinking about the delicious fried dough I had while there last time.) It's like a permanent carnival or something. There's the giant ferris wheel, the giant swing, the miniature golf, the fireworks show every Saturday, the cheap boat tours around the lake, and you can catch a play at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre there. They did my all-time favorite performance of A Midsummer's Night Dream.
And Chicago always has free concerts and events happening in Millennium and Grant Park.
belated thanks for the marvelous tips! i actually wrote down your suggestions and read them off to my friends ahha! also also omg i had the fried dough and it was spectacular! i will post some pics later so you can see hee!
Just jumping in to say that Shedd Aquarium is where I learned to love otters. They've got this lakefront show that's also pretty neat.
And seconding pretty much everything in this post, but with a note that you should avoid 26th street in Pilsen if you're in a hurry, especially if it's a Sunday.(great for people watching, though)
And Navy Pier has this absurdly large collection of stained glass that everyone forgets about, right next to this exhibit on police firearms. The riverfront architectural tours are also worth it.
