I think the purging thing is a great idea. It'll get rid of a lot of unused journals, and really, I may have some old RP journals myself that I'd like to keep, but I don't have any problem with logging in to them and leaving a dummy entry just so they don't get deleted. After that, I'd have to wait two years before they get warned, and that's plenty of time.

I'm a little jealous that you have vivid dreams. The only times I've EVER been able to remember my dreams is when I'm freakishly sick, and those were not fun dreams either. Otherwise, every night is just a black abyss of nothing until morning.

that's how i feel too! if it's a journal i own and i care that much, i'll take the time to log in once every two years and post something minor. if it's a journal that doesn't belong to me, i'll find a way of archiving the content for my own perusal. it's ridiculous to expect a business to continue hosting defunct journals for so long.

i dream every night but i usually don't remember much [or anything]. but lately, the dreams have been really realistic, and i actually remember them for at least a day! so i thought i should start keeping record ;)

Definitely!

I think dream diaries are cool and pretty fun, so if you can remember it, go for it! I think it's cool that people get to dream about fun stuff like fandoms and themselves going on crazy adventures and complete nonsensical shit. :D

i think this is a good idea since it clears up space and frees up usernames. of course a lot of folks are wanking about this now, which i think is fairly ridiculous. people are up in arms about defunct graphics journals and fic comms - why don't they just back up those things? it really isn't that hard to save fic and graphics to your own hdd/webspace/etc, especially if it's ~so~ precious to you even when it hasn't been updated for 2 years.

THANK YOU. I am seeing all this whining about it and I'm like, "Hey guys, you know how LJ's been really slow with notifications lately? It's because the servers are backed up. THIS IS GOING TO HELP." Plus, I finally get to make a community I've been angsting over a stolen username for and get to stop worrying one of my RL friends who had LJs when they were cool will one day randomly stop by and figure me out. So on several selfish levels--ONWARD HO, LJ!

OMG I TOTES HEAR YOU ON THE RL FRIENDS, BB. a huge chunk of mine opened ljs after i told them about the site back in high school and i wasn't in fandom them so it didn't really matter. but now that i update SO OFTEN [and about a lot of things that aren't ~socially acceptable at large~] i want those journals to be gone :P

PLUS QUICKER LOAD TIMES AND TIMELY NOTIFICATIONS? FUCK YEA!

EXACTLY. I only actually got on LJ because my best friend in middle school made me one. And I was like, "I will never use it!" AND THEN I DISCOVERED FANDOM. And now they don't use theirs and I deleted most of them from my flist, but still. One tiny load off my shoulders!

it just makes sense. email companies will delete inactive accounts and usernames on forums, websites, etc will expire after a certain time. why should it be any different on lj?

Dude. I've literally been waiting for the LJ inactive name purge for over 5 years. Ever since I realized that my real name was taken, but the journal has been inactive and abandoned since 2003.

Or at the VERY least I might find something else spiffy. Octoberxsong is sounding pretty stale to me. :(

heh, where does octoberxsong come from?

I came up with it when I was about 18 or so, and heavily into my rebellious phase. It's originally a Bif Naked song, but I used it for something where octobersong was taken, so I was like, "I WILL ADD AN X BETWEEN THE WORDS AND BE UNIQUE AND EDGY!"

...now, not so much. -.-
