Well. I am declaring this done, even though it needs about a thousand hours more work, because I have to get up tomorrow morning and go to my grandmother's birthday party. To the glorious likethesun2: I was all OMG YAY when I got your requests, and I was hoping to write something really long and really good, but I got blocked, so I hope I didn't fail at the ( Read more... )

(First reaction: omigod Katherine wrote for me and God is good.)

This is awesome. And I am going to tell you why, in more depth, in the morning, when I don't have this headache. I just wanted to say on first read how entirely awesome it is, and how much I like what you've done with Harry's voice, and how thrilled I am by the epigraph (Whitman's Civil-War poetry gets NOWHERE NEAR enough attention), and how "...watched Bull Randleman smoke like a great blond saint in ascendance..." gave me writer's envy like you wouldn't believe.

All of that, and more. Thank you, thank you.

(P.S.,
Have you been getting abyssinia4077's and my emails? I am so so antsy and excited about this.)

Oh YAY you liked the Whitman. I thought you would, but some people have a violent antipathy toward him, so I was a touch worried. I've just read Drum-Taps for the first time, because I'm doing an illustration for school about Civil War drummer boys and wanted some text to go in it, and zomg, greatness.

Must I change my triumphant songs? said I to myself,
Must I indeed learn to chant the cold dirges of the baffled?
And sullen hymns of defeat?

I agonized over that line about Bull, first because I was trying to find exactly the right words to describe how he smokes his cigars, and second because I worried that the line was too... I don't know... written? That it stood out and was self-conscious. But it seems to have made people happy, so I'm happy too.

(P.S. Yes I have and I am so thrilled, but I have not responded because I suck at organizing my life. Will figure stuff out and get back to you both ASAP.)

...watched Bull Randleman smoke like a great blond saint in ascendance...

For that phrase alone, I shall worship you forever.

This is so good. Harry's trains of thought, the way he guesses at the other guys' wives and girlfriends, everything feels so right, down to the very last sentence and the very last phrase.

oh... everything, absolutely EVERY line was beautiful.

"The world turned around Dick Winters, some days."

And for that line... I think I love you.

He let them wonder. The truth was, she had Dick’s blue eyes, and Lewis’ black hair, and a smile like Shifty Powers’, and pretty hands like Doc Roe’s. She could glare like Martin when she was disgruntled, and she could laugh as loud as Hoobler and Perconte and Luz all at once.
Okay, now I’m kinda hot for Kitty Grogan.

he closed his eyes and saw Kitty behind them, like he always did, and then he looked at Easy Company and thought how close this was to being just as good.
I love you too much.

He saw Joe Toye in the hospital. Joe confided in him without hesitation that he was planning to bust out, and it never occurred to Harry to exercise his authority. He thought, later, that he should have.
Okay, normally that paragraph would have gained a big old “OOOFF” from me, but this month it’s more like ... noises I cannot spell.

This was what Harry was thinking all the while Lewis and Dick were whispering to each other, and then he opened his eyes, because suddenly he was embarrassed and he wanted them to know he was listening.Flipping ( ... )

I am in awe. This is absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for opening this door into Harry's mind. It feels so true and right. And his observations of his comrades, wow, like I said, I'm in awe.

Big, huge kudos.
