Went to do some exploratory baby 'shopping' today. I say 'shopping' because all we did was walk around the store, taking pictures of things we liked, so we could buy them later (hopefully cheaper online). Several thoughts:

1) $1000 stroller. Really? really? At that price, it better have a GPS and be self-propelled and take my child out for walks by ( Read more... )

baby shopping, baby

I couldn't help but giggle when I read this. It is so true though!!! And the stupid registry checklists they have... You end up buying so much extra crap. You don't need to buy into all the hype... like Nursery Water. Use and buy what makes sense to you! There really is so much useless baby stuff out there. But how can you resist the Hippo humidifier??? :P
Is this your first? If you need any advice or anything, let me know. This is my second go-around :)

Lol the hippo humidifier calls to me... :D A lot of stuff they sell seems just to convince parents that if they don't buy it, horrible stuff will happen (like their baby will not get into Harvard or something).

Yeah, it's our first. We try to go into the store with a list so as not to get overwhelmed and to avoid buying random stuff. Second time is probably easier. :)

oh my god strollers are crazy expensive - my mother is a childminder and the awful nouveau-riche mothers she works for compete over who has the fanciest stroller! ugh. my mum says they all end up using the cheap mclaren collapsible ones anyway because they are the lightest and easiest!

that said, a decent stroller may make your life way easier and more pleasurable in terms of getting out and about. my friend jen, who has 3 kids, swears by her fancy, suspension-having stroller because it means she can get out of the house with all her kids and bags and stuff and not have a miserable day.

They must plateau at some point, mustn't they? I mean, how much more awesome is $1000 dollar stroller than a $500 dollar stroller? It's the 'better bonding with your baby' bit that killed me.

oh exactly, what nonsense! the 'nursery water' is pretty good. although all mineral water is a rip off along the same lines really!

What's funny is that some bottled water here is just tap water. If you look at some bottles closely, they say 'contains water from municipal supply of Town X'.

One of my friends said yesterday she had to get a separate stroller for winter in Toronto. O.O
Most strollers seem okay from newborn till they are like 3 (unless they fall apart, obviously). You probably end up buying a lighter umbrella stroller later anyway, because they are very light and fold into nothing.
I'm hoping this poverty is temporary (well, I'm pretty sure it is) and we'll have a bit more money later when the kid will need a booster seat, etc. Right now I'm just trying not to convince myself that I need absolutely everything people say you need, cause otherwise you go insane.
