The Dented Fender: A Random Gathering

Kamenashi twirls a finger in his long curly brown hair. After going out with Koki, Kamenashi didn’t expect to take on the role of Kazuko again. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. Kamenashi decides that he would make the sacrifice.

Ever since Taguchi hinted the possibility that Koki is attached (Ueda calling Taguchi the ‘root of all evil and troubles’ isn’t too far off), Koki’s teammates has been requesting for an introduction. When Koki refuses to budge, his teammates have rudely invited themselves into Koki’s house, declaring that they will not leave till they see his girlfriend. Of course, Kamenashi would have been fine with that (it’s Koki’s house anyway!) if not for the fact that football season has just ended; with the presence of extra pests, Kamenashi wouldn’t be able to drop by for a cuddling session with Koki after a gruelling day of work. A substitute girlfriend would have worked if it wasn’t for the jealous bone in Kamenashi’s body.

“Yucchi, are you done yet?” Kamenashi shouts at his flatmate. Nakamaru isn’t even the star of the gathering, so why is he taking such a long time?

"He is probably taking forever to come up with the dorkiest outfit he can ever come up with," Ueda snorts, fiddling with his scarf. "Ever since Koki invited Nakamaru, that fanatic has been gapping how wonderful it is to meet all his football idols at a go."

“Don’t sound like a sore thumb,” Kamenashi teases. “You’re just upset that Koki didn’t ask you along. But hey! Taguchi invited you.”

“I’m not going,” Ueda huffs indignantly. “I don’t want to see that dense giraffe. My intelligence decreases with every conversation!”

“Your loss then!” Nakamaru interrupts as he steps out of the bathroom.

“Yucchi… you’re like a walking merchandise shop!” Kamenashi laughs. “You can do without the team’s cap and flags!”

Nakamaru looks hesitant as he removes the items from himself.

“But it’s not like any fan can have this sort of opportunity…”

“Well, you don’t have much time to think about it because that annoying bastard is here to pick the both of you,” Ueda grumbles as he peers out of the window. “You better hurry because -”

Kamenashi cringes as Taguchi begins hitting the car horn repeatedly.

Some things never change.

“Ueda, are you sure you’re not coming along?” Kamenashi asks as he steps out of the apartment. “There’s lots of free food and we need your quick thinking in case anything crops up…”

When Ueda sighs and knits his eyebrows together, Kamenashi knows that his friend’s determination is wavering. After all, Ueda hates being left alone in the house.

“I’ll even do your laundry tomorrow if you’re willing to go…”

Kamenashi chuckles when Ueda darts out of the house within minutes. He should have used this magic sentence much earlier. That would have saved hours of persuasion.

“What are you still standing there for?” Ueda grins, delight sparkling in his eyes. “Let’s go!”

“You were just waiting for the laundry offer, weren’t you?”

The car trip isn’t peaceful at all; with Taguchi’s constant yakking and the need to restrain Ueda from strangling the driver, Kamenashi almost exclaims in relief when they finally pull up at Koki’s driveway. Judging by the amount of shoes littered outside Koki’s apartment, Kamenashi gets annoyed at the sheer number of people he would have to interact with.

“Don’t worry about it, my laundry-doing pal,” Ueda smirks as he squeezes Kamenashi’s tensed shoulders. “You have laryngitis today. I’ll do the talking.”

So washing can indeed buy Ueda’s supreme lying abilities for a day.

“Koki, guess who I brought along?” Taguchi announces happily after flinging the door wide open.

Kamenashi peers through the doorway and catches Koki’s stunned expression. It’s safe to bet on the fact that Koki didn’t expect him to dress up. A round of murmuring runs through the additional company at Koki’s place when Kamenashi bows politely and steps into the house. It takes another couple of minutes before someone erupts with the accusation that Koki is the “violent boyfriend that broke Kazuko’s leg”. Ueda laughs and stomps his feet obnoxiously as Kamenashi tries his best to stifle his laughter and maintain his ladylike image.

“So the exercise pole you have in the living room is for your own personal showcase by Kazuko!” another marvels and Kamenashi reddens while Koki hurls a few pieces of potato chips at his friend. Kamenashi doesn’t think there can be any other occasion more awkward than today’s. When he takes a seat beside Koki, he reaffirms his previous thought. Nakamaru sitting in a corner and admiring his idols doesn’t make this gathering any easier to get by.

In the background of all the wolf whistles Kamenashi is getting, he hears Ueda and Taguchi quarrelling about car tyres or a topic similar to that. He reckons that he can only trust Koki to help him survive this meeting with a pack of hyenas who can’t stop cheering for a pole-dancing performance.

“Sato, I didn’t know you like running your leg up mine,” Koki growls and Kamenashi just likes how protective Koki is at times. However, knowing fully that Koki can’t possibly protect him from nearly the entire football team, Kamenashi gestures and excuses himself to the kitchen. He would rather slave under the hot stove with makeup than to remain in the living room for a moment longer.

“Kazuko can cook too?” somebody whines before calling Koki a ‘lucky bastard’.

Kamenashi is stirring pasta sauce when Koki casually walks into the kitchen and offers to help.

“Aren’t you going to entertain your teammates instead?” Kamenashi asks as he continues stirring the crushed tomatoes while tossing a variety of seasonings in the pot. “They’re wrecking your place.”

“Gives you all the more reason to stay and help me with cleaning after they are finally gone?”

“When did I volunteer?” Kamenashi pouts uncooperatively as he orders Koki to retrieve some ingredients from the fridge. After fetching the capsicums and garlic, Koki sets them on the table before proceeding to snake his hand around Kamenashi's waist.
Although it’s not the first time they’ve flirted in the kitchen, Kamenashi still blushes whenever Koki does so. In an extremely casual moment whereby Kamenashi forgets to watch the fire and initiates a kiss, Ueda interrupts by trespassing into the kitchen and requesting for a chopper (for very obvious reasons, like decapitating Taguchi). Ueda curses when he realises what they are doing and flees from the situation (and explanations).

Kamenashi tries to dispel his embarrassment by shoving Koki away and pouring his concentration into mixing the tomato sauce furiously. He has never been one that displays his affections openly. To make himself feel better, he decides that Ueda is a better option when compared to Nakamaru.

Dinner is turning into an incredibly painful event when Koki’s team mates are either drunk (Kamenashi cringes at the amount of beer cans he’ll have to clean) or plain rude. Asking an overwhelming amount of questions about their personal relationship, Kamenashi feigns ignorance by simply gesturing about his lack of voice. Koki on their other hand gets snappy and Kamenashi remembers how Koki used to have severe anger management. Judging by how Koki has begun narrowing his eyes, Kamenashi anticipates a sudden outburst or flipping of the coffee table.

“I’ll wager 1000 yen that Koki wouldn’t flare up,” Kamenashi overhears Ueda making a bet with Taguchi. Taguchi whispers “deal” and true to Ueda’s prediction, Koki merely goes for a smoke and returns in better spirits.

“Said he’ll never lose his temper in front of you,” Ueda leans over when he notices Kamenashi’s look of puzzlement. “Aww, isn’t that sweet~? And dinner is really good. I believed it was made with love, no?”

Kamenashi scowls and kicks Ueda under the table. When Suzuki lets out a howl instead, Kamenashi looks innocently at another member by the table and a tiny scuffle ensues. Using the excuse that they will cause too much damage to his house, Koki hauls them out of the house and Taguchi sends them home.

“A couple more to go and I’ll be able to change out of this dress," Kamenashi thinks viciously. Carrying a bowl of pasta sauce and offering more to the players around the table, he 'accidentally' spills the sauce, ruining almost everybody's clothing. Giving the most forlorn expression he has mastered, Koki's friends chorus in unison that 'Kazuko, it is alright!' and reckons that it is time to return.

Kamenashi doubts that anyone will suspect his plot; after all, pretty ladies get away with most trouble.

***

Being all understanding, Nakamaru bids Kamenashi and Koki farewell while Ueda merely leaves due to his lack of desire to help in cleaning.

“I’ll be locking the door tonight, don’t bother coming home,” Ueda chuckles and dodges when Kamenashi chucks a random beer can at his direction. Koki grins and sends a thumbs-up in Ueda’s direction.

“I feel like freaking Cinderella,” Kamenashi complains as he grabs a random trash bag that Koki has prepared and starts sweeping random junk in. He continues rambling on about how terrible it is to be unable to talk when Koki tugs the broom out of his hand.

“It’s twelve, my princess,” Koki mimics a bow and Kamenashi curtsies as a form of thanks. “I’ll do the cleaning while you wash up. It has been a long day and I’m pretty sure you hate having that amount of make-up on your face.”

“Sometimes I wonder if you can read my mind,” Kamenashi sighs appreciatively at how gentlemanly Koki is. “Can I assume that I’m free to grab anything from your wardrobe too?”

“When have you ever asked for my permission?” Koki laughs before asking Kamenashi to ‘go ahead’.

Removing copious amounts of eyeliner and fake eyelashes proves to be a challenge after months of quitting the club. As much as Kamenashi would like to share the chores with Koki, he doesn’t get out of the bathroom till two hours later. Besides his make-up, Kamenashi blames the bubbly bath for being too much to his liking; the new essence that Koki has imported is very soothing.

Stepping sheepishly into the living room, Kamenashi is amazed that the living room is restored to its former glory, free of whatever mess it had previously. Koki is lounging on the couch, showered and hand scratching under Sakura’s chin lazily.

“I infer that you really like the new fragrance,” Koki smirks when Kamenashi takes the seat beside him. “You smell like vanilla.”

“And you’re using the new shampoo I gave you,” Kamenashi replies while snuggling closer to Koki. Resting his head on Koki’s chest, he inhales the refreshing scent of lemon. A few minutes of silence and peace passes before Kamenashi wonders (aloud) if Koki is in the mood to continue from where they left off in the kitchen.

Koki doesn’t reply but gets up from the couch to lock his door instead. “Don’t want anyone walking in and disrupting the moment,” Koki explains when Kamenashi stares at him in bewilderment.

“How thoughtful,” Kamenashi muses before wrapping his arms around Koki and initiating a kiss.

***

Kamenashi groans when his mobile rings obnoxiously in the morning. Koki passes Kamenashi his phone before crawling back under the sheets sleepily.

“Isn’t today your day off?” Koki mumbles before turning to the other side of the bed.

Kamenashi shrugs before reading the two messages left for him.

Message (Ueda to Kamenashi): I think it is time I cook up an unreasonable excuse and kick you out of our house.

Message (Ueda to Kamenashi): And no guesses who will take you in. You’ll be able to see Koki every day ~ Isn’t that ideal?

“Stupid Ueda,” Kamenashi flushes before thinking that it isn’t too bad a suggestion either…
