“Kamenashi is given more opportunities to leave KAT-TUN as compared to the other members. I think he faces various difficult things. That’s why I want KAT-TUN to be a place where he can be happy. I want him to feel relieved when he comes home to KAT-TUN. I want KAT-TUN to be a place where he can be the happiest.” - Taguchi Junnosuke

Taguchi doesn’t know when it started. Maybe it is the fleeting touches during fan service and photo shoots or maybe it is the occasional smiles that Kamenashi uses to reciprocate his very own - Taguchi only realizes he is possibly in love with Kamenashi when interview questions directed at Kamenashi revolving around the topic of prospective partners have begun to irk him. Everything becomes clearer when he feels a tinge of jealousy upon walking in on Kamenashi making kissy faces at Nakamaru.
It probably began as a small crush; after all, what’s there not to admire about Kamenashi’s tenacity and stoic side? Somehow along the way, he must have paid too much attention to Kamenashi because naming his strengths during interviews is turning way too easy. And then without conscious knowing, Kamenashi has turned into someone he is really attracted to, impossible to weed out of his system.

Sometimes, Taguchi wishes he is Nakamaru. That man, despite having no distinct traits, has a strange hold on Kamenashi for one. He would gladly trade his stylish hairdo for Nakamaru’s wig if that will cause Kamenashi to turn and look at him.
Sadly, making such a proposition will probably be insulting to Nakamaru and hence, leading to rejection. Taguchi doesn’t try the easy way out but he continues to attempt capturing Kamenashi’s attention by telling jokes. It never works though. Kamenashi has gotten better at ignoring him in recent years.
However, on rare occasions where Kamenashi actually chuckles, Taguchi feels oddly satisfied. It makes all the embarrassment and insults he has received seem worthwhile.

After Koki made the decision to leave, Kamenashi's sincere smiles seemingly went along as well. It is especially hurtful to watch the other man struggling on variety shows alone, forcing a steely face to prove to the world that KAT-TUN is going to be fine and that they will believe in their fans no matter what. Nonetheless, Kamenashi is only human - Taguchi knows of Kamenashi's own bouts of insecurities, having been through the various meetings that made Kamenashi more distressed than before. He will very much like to tell him that there's no need to pretend because no matter what happens, he will be there for him.
The words never left his mouth even when they are alone in a room before Nakamaru and Ueda came. "It's only Shuichi,” Taguchi eventually chooses to say. "And this time, we are all with you. It'll be fine."
If Kamenashi heard his words, he made no signs to show that he did. Although the cold response is awful, Taguchi forces a smile when the other two enter.

Filming their promotional message starts and Taguchi feels a small sense of triumph when Kamenashi finally cracks a smile at his joke. If he only has to play the fool to earn Kamenashi's smile, Taguchi will gladly do it. Yet those moments are often fleeting and amount to nothing when the cameras stop rolling.
Off set, Kamenashi often returns to his stony self and sits alone, staring into space and contemplating on things he never discusses with the others. Taguchi wants to shoulder the burden together but who is he to demand that Kamenashi speaks about his problems?

Backstage before their short segment with ZIP! begins, KAT-TUN is called to gather early and to decide on their answers for any questions given later. One in particular catches Taguchi’s eyes.
Who do you share the strongest kizuna with? it reads.
Taguchi wants to know about Kamenashi’s answer without any pre-emption.
“Why don’t we run through and see our natural responses for this question,” he proposes and the rest of his group mates agree without much fuss. “On the count of three, let’s raise our answers, shall we?”
Taguchi picks Kamenashi's name without thinking and it isn’t unexpected when Kamenashi chooses Nakamaru instead.
It is but a usual affair. Taguchi tries hard not to pout. He’s turning 28 soon and 28 year-old men do not pout. Maybe with the exception of Ueda and a few of his seniors who refuse to admit that they’re getting on their years.
“Eh, discrepancies?” Kamenashi raises an eyebrow. “Maybe we should coordinate our answers a little more? Ueda and Taguchi could...”
“But won’t inconsistent answers make everything a lot more interesting?” Taguchi argues. He doesn’t want even the smallest opportunity to express how he feels about Kamenashi to slip by. “And Kazuya, maybe you’re just someone whom we can all connect with!”
“I’m oddly flattered. I guess…”
“So I’m chopped liver?” Ueda interrupts, punctuating his sentence with a yawn. “Either way, I don’t really care. But I thought Nakamaru would pick me at the very least.”
“You didn’t pick me either,” Nakamaru reasons. “Why Taguchi?”
“We’re not having a fight before filming right?” Kamenashi sighs in exhaustion. “We’re too old for that.”
“You look like the only one who aged a lot though,” Taguchi blurts. He meant it as a show of concern but it doesn't seem like Kamenashi interpreted it the same way.
“I have a lot on my mind,” the other replies curtly before getting up and leaving for the actual filming. Odd looks are exchanged among the remaining members and Taguchi trails behind as Nakamaru and Ueda chooses to follow Kamenashi.

Things continue to remain awkward as Taguchi is asked to sit next to Kamenashi. He contemplates on changing his answer for that particular question to portray member-ai, yet his heart refuses to let him lie. If he can’t even convey the slightest of his true emotions, he is no different from a puppet on strings.
Kamenashi looks vaguely surprised when their answers remain the same as it was backstage. Although Taguchi has hoped that further explanations would be requested for their answers, the elaboration he carefully thought up was never needed.

Taguchi never apologised for what he said that day. By the time they all turn up in the same dance studio once more, Kamenashi appears to have forgotten about that incident. Either Kamenashi has a big heart or Taguchi is simply forgettable in the eyes of Kamenashi. Taguchi believes in the latter - that man has so much more work and so little time for himself; why would he bother about a careless statement made by a mere colleague?
As they practice their choreography for the first performance after deciding to continue as a four-member group, Taguchi attempts to keep such negativity out of his mind. People wouldn’t pay to see a grumpy person on stage. He has to smile through everything. And since Kamenashi has been doing such a wonderful job at masking his stress and worries, it won’t do to pale in effort.
“Taguchi sure thrives while dancing, doesn’t he?” Kamenashi comments admiringly, snapping Taguchi momentarily out of his zone of concentration. He has been so absorbed that he hasn’t realised that the rest have chosen to take a break.
“You think so?” Taguchi beams, genuinely for Kamenashi is the one who paid that compliment.
“Yeah, what’s there to lie about?”
Taguchi grins as he nudges Kamenashi off the dance floor.
“Then I’ll see it as my responsibility that I’m not the only one who shines on stage.”
Ueda lets out a groan in the background.

The cheers and screams that KAT-TUN receives on stage are overwhelming. Taguchi misses all the excitement when they were temporarily on hiatus. Seeing the fans happy is one of the many reasons why he loves this job.
And it is exactly because he loves both Kamenashi and his work that he knows he’ll never profess his love for his group mate. He doesn’t want to lose either of them when his confession fails. Not only will it be difficult to face Kamenashi once more, it’ll break him to see their newly-formed group dynamics crumble in his hands. Taguchi doesn’t want to be the cause of this irreversible damage. Kamenashi has invested too much in KAT-TUN for Taguchi to ever consider messing up. It’s fine for him to leave things as they are. As long as KAT-TUN remains as a place where Kamenashi can be happy, Taguchi will not ask for more.
Moreover, Taguchi figures that unrequited love is probably the only form of love he will ever receive from Kamenashi. Even so, he is contented. As long as Kamenashi never knows, Kamenashi can't possibly give him an outright rejection and he will be able to continue loving Kamenashi that way.
Not to mention, he would never have to go through the feeling of heartbreak either.
End.
