It wasn't a dream.

He watches her sleep, listens to her breathe. It's even, deep and calm and he's reminded of when she would sit by Nadia's cot and hold a small mirror up to her face.

"You would do it night after night..." he holds the palm of his hand over her mouth and feels warm air against his skin. He settles his fingers down on her cheek, tenderly rubbing back and forth and her eyes spring open. She stares at him for a few moments, unemotional. They had moved from their daughter's room back here, falling asleep together again. It still didn't seem real and part of him is suspicious that maybe she's really dead and this is a figment. He was crazy enough, wasn't he?

Dark thoughts go as Maya turns her face away and pulls the cover off her body. He had changed her out of the wet clothes and into something dry. Somewhat pacified she settles her arms down and stares at the ceiling before she starts to get up.

"I should-"

"No." He takes a firm but careful hold of her shoulder and pushes her back down and she does so without resistance. She was very weak. "Just stay, sleep." She closes her eyes but opens them again,  looking at him with confusion. He smiles nervously. "Uh, Nadia is asleep."

"Is she ok?" she sounds panicked, the first traces of fear that must be boiling underneath.

"She's fine, you've seen her, remember?...I waited for you, last night, but then I fell asleep.  I found you, in the water...maybe we should talk about this later?" She nods, throat rippling as she swallows and he pulls her closer to him instinctively. For the first time in years she does so willingly, curls herself against him and he takes comfort in the warmth of her. A silence spools around them, neither sleeping or moving until she speaks softly.

"What did I do night after night?"

"...when she was a baby you used to make sure she was breathing."

She offers a ghost of a sardonic smile. "I sometimes still do that...and you were watching."

"Well I was worried to."

"I know, I know now..." she trails off, her eyelids heavy and he presses close to her ear, whispering sleep. She turns her head away on the pillow but keeps her body next to his, one hand on the arm that's around her waist. Gabriel buries his face against her neck and mummers small, soft but powerful words and not once does she recoil.
