The rain beats against the overshadowing surface of his umbrella, almost deafening in it's intensity. This is why it takes him a few moments to realise that there is a woman standing next to him, weeping. Gabriel turns from reading the bus stop timetable to give her a glance and freezes, breath in taken sharply.

Maya, it was Maya.

She stands with her arms wrapped around her chest and totally unprotected from the deluge from above. Her face is crumpled up in misery and she shakes her head often, uttering sorrowful sounds. His intense gaze must prod into her grief and she flicks her eyes to him for a moment and shifts on her feet, uneasy. But just as she looks away she does a double take and he sees recognition enter her eyes.

Gabriel stands stunned for a moment before he  moves his umbrella over her head and her large black eyes roll up to stare at the large canopy and then back at him. A small smile curls her mouth.

"Thank you Gabriel. That's - that's your name right?"

He doesn't answer at first, so surprised that she had any idea of him at all. Finally he nods, swallowing. "Yes, we attend the same church."

"Si..." she nods and her face falls again, her head bowed down and it begins to shake again, slowly back and forth. "Not for much longer unfortunately." She starts to cry again and she covers her mouth with her hand, not looking at him. Gabriel opens his mouth and then closes it, unsure.

"Is - is something wrong?"

She nods, head still lowered and speaks towards her feet. "Someone threatened to reported me to immigration, they're gong to take me back home, to the Dominican Republic."

"What?!" He barks, appalled and her face turns to him, her brows raised. Quickly covering his misstep he softens his tone. "I mean, I'm sorry. I had no idea..." He thought he knew almost everything about her but this was news to him. She's here illegally? "Someone threatened to do that?" He says, his voice low and his teeth clench together.  "Isn't there anything you can do to stop them? Anyway to make sure you can't be forced to leave?" He knows, it's ringing his mind but pretence was needed.

Maya continues to stare at him, her sad eyes sharpening in thought before she snorts and looks away with her lips curling. "I'd have to marry a citizen but that's so complicated. I don't see any man getting on a knee for me...unless you will?" she finishes fast and for the first time grins, clearly joking. Gabriel manages to keep his mouth shut but just barely. As soon as she said it he could see himself getting on his knees in the rain and picture her surprised face clearly. This woman had no idea the things he would do for her. He stares at her gawping and she snorts again, looking away. "I didn't think so, but it was worth a shot, right?" Maya sighs and looks around him to look up the road and then steps around him. "My bus is here," she offers her hand and after blinking at her takes it, savouring the touch of her skin against his. "It was nice to finally talk to you Gabriel."

She steps back but he doesn't let go and she tilts her head. His grip tightens and he wants nothing more then to tug her back and keep her by his side. But as her surprised face turns into a frown he thrusts the umbrella at her in offering. "Take this, so you won't get wet." She opens her mouth to disagree but he takes her hand and curls her fingers around the handle. "If - if you need anything just ask me, that's all you have to do. I don't want you to go." He says hastily , his voice rising in octave with emotion and it was her turn to blink at him.

She backs away as the bus pulls up, eyes still pinned to his with confusion and she nods and smiles sadly. "Gracious, I'll see you at church. Thank you, thank you..." she gets onto the bus, shaking the rain water from the umbrella. Before the doors close on her Gabriel steps forward, standing in the gutter so the rainwater runs over his shoes and soaks the bottom of his pants. His eyes shine strangely.

"What's his name? The person that's doing this to you?"

She stares at him for a moment and her eyes burn as fiercely as his. "Gilberto." She spits the word out and he breathes in deeply, mind spinning as the doors close and the bus drives off, water spraying up from the tires. Gabriel stands in the rain, watching until the bus round a corner and he's alone.
