WARNINGS: Language and sexual themes/situations in later chapters.
SUMMARY: Hyde has fallen for Yukihiro and a disturbance within the band is a good excuse to spend some bonding time with the quiet drummer. Complications, of course, will ensue as they struggle to sort things out for the band, their friends, and themselves.

Notes:
**** I wrote this a while back, before Tetsu changed his name to Tetsuya. Also, it's set in 2006 so don't bash me for getting his name wrong please? xP

First time posting any writing in a while and I come with a new story! Hopefully you can expect many much updates in the coming weeks... I've got a pile of things to check over and post so... yeah.

Anyway! Yes, I realize this is a long title... and it's a little odd. But not as odd as the one I almost went with! 'Aboard the S.S. Magnum', which (while I find it hilarious) is rather misleading... as Gackt plays a very very small role in the story, actually... although his boat is fairly crucial to the plot. Haha, you'll have to wait until chapter four to know what I'm talking about!! ;)

ON WITH THE FIRST CHAPTER!

......

CHAPTER 1

“Yukihiro-san.”

“Hn?”

“… Are you going to eat that?”

A pause.

“Um…Yes?”

“Damn.”

Yukihiro had eyed him with mildly amused confusion later on, munching quietly on his chocolate bar while Hyde sulked about not having enough change on him to buy one himself.

It was later, as they parted ways at the end of their little after-work excursion, that Hyde shoved his hands in his coat pockets to feel the cool, smooth, wrapper of a second chocolate and almond bar. He grinned, stopping to turn and watch the back of the drummer’s retreating head before he lost sight of him in the crowd on the sidewalk.

It was probably little gestures like these that caused Hyde to fall for him.

Yukihiro was a mystery in many ways, and perhaps most of that originated from his quiet demeanor and passive attitude, but you never did know what to expect from the drummer.

He had his faults, but they were all passable, and his cute and lovable quirks made up for anything else anyway, in Hyde’s opinion. He could be shy and humble, then passionate and fiery the next -though this side of him was rarely seen when he wasn’t behind a drum set. He could ooze a sexy, dangerous, aura or smile that smile of his and make you instantly want to coddle him up for ever and always.

It took Hyde a while -years in fact- to realize that he had noticed these things about the drummer, but in a sense he almost wished he hadn’t. For one thing, he was pretty sure that Yukihiro didn’t like him back. The guy hardly ever spoke about his relationships. If he did it was always vague and in passing on television programs, and always hinted at his partners being of the female variety -which Hyde, admittedly, was not.

Hyde sighed, twirling his car keys on his index finger as he slouched his way towards the studio for practice. These were thoughts he told himself time and time again to get rid of, but it didn’t seem to be working. He had to be professional and snap out of this funk, Tetsu would kill him if he screwed up rehearsal for everyone else because he was feeling a little heartsick. Nodding with an expression of determination, he resolved to push all thoughts of Yukihiro to the back of his mind, at least for the next bunch of hours.

Despite this silent agreement with himself, old habits were hard to break, and his eyes immediately roamed towards the drum set at the back of the studio as he stepped through the doorway. Yukihiro wasn’t seated there as he usually was, and he waved distractedly at Tetsu as his eyes flickered around the room. Nope. Apparently, only himself and the bassist were there on time.

“You’re late, Haido.” Tetsu smiled despite his stern tone. “Good to see you haven’t changed.”

Okaaaay, so Tetsu was on time… and the other two were just really late.

“Where are the others?”

Tetsu laughed, adjusting the strap on his bass. “What, no ‘nice to see you again in person, leader-sama’? I’ve hardly seen you at all over the last year, you know?”

Hyde laughed too, scratching the back of his head as he dumped his things on one end of the old couch. “Sorry, sorry, it is nice to see you, Tet-chan. I’m just surprised that the others aren’t here before me.”

“Sorry to burst your bubble, Doiha-chan, but you’re just as late as ever.” He chuckled as Hyde frowned. “Ken and Yuki went off to grab some snacks, or drinks or something while we waited for you.”

“Oh… Sorry about that, I slept in.”

“Yeah, yeah, we do have a deadline though, so let’s not make this a habit?” True enough, they would have to work their asses off for the next few months if they wanted to pull off the outstanding 15th anniversary concerts they wanted to.

Hyde nodded his agreement, and though he was sure Tetsu didn’t believe he’d actually start waking up with his alarm, the bassist let the subject drop, moving on to talk about what they’d each been doing during this latest hiatus.

In the middle of this discussion, a low yelp followed by loud laughter -that could only be Ken’s- echoed into the room from the hall. Both Hyde and Tetsu turned to look as the two missing band members burst in after the noise. Yuki looked embarrassed, amused, and perhaps a little nervous as Ken had apparently lifted him up piggyback style and ran him down the hallway. A couple plastic bags hung from Ken’s hands as he straightened up, panting, and allowed the blonde, shorthaired drummer to slide down off his back, both laughing all the while.

Tetsu laughed at the pair too, and Hyde forced a lopsided smile onto his face. “Wow… You two are awfully close all of a sudden, aren’t you?”

Ken laughed, sauntering over to dump the contents of the bags onto a small table near the couch. “It’s not really sudden Hyde, while you were off gallivanting across the country with your new friend, Kaz-san, leaving us all alone on our ownsome… Well, I had to hang out with somebody.”

“Hey!” Yukihiro laughed, attempting to look indignant as he wandered over to snatch some pocky from the mess on the table.

Ken chuckled, slinging an arm over his shoulder. “Naww, you know it’s cuz you’re secretly my favorite, Yuki-chan~! If you weren’t, I would have called Tetsu.” He jerked a thumb in the aforementioned bassist’s direction.

“Wow, nice Ken-chan. I feel so appreciated here.” Tetsu chuckled sarcastically, pulling the chip bag out of Ken’s hands and pushing his guitar case into them instead. “See if I don’t pick on you for the rest of practice for that remark!”

“Yes! Practice! Quit fooling around!” Hyde slipped himself in between the drummer and the guitarist, forcing Ken to drop his arm. “We’re on a deadline you know!” Scowling, he snatched the pocky from Yuki’s grasp and set it somewhat forcefully upon the table before striding irritably to his mic stand.

Ken raised an eyebrow and Yuki shot a questioning look at their leader, who could only shrug with a frown before ushering them all to their own positions.

It was a long, strenuous practice. After being away with their solo projects for so long, they were all a little rusty when it came to playing harmoniously together. At the end of the rehearsal, Tetsu suggested they all go for drinks, which Hyde readily agreed to. Ken and Yukihiro declined, much to Hyde’s further irritation. Ken had apparently made plans to help the drummer with a squeaky door in his new apartment.

This just proved how out of touch Hyde had been while on tour, he hadn’t even known that Yukihiro moved his place of residence. Ken and Yukihiro left side by side, pulling out of the parking lot in the same car they arrived together in. Hyde fumed silently, and Tetsu could only watch the dark waves seep off of him warily before suggesting a bar.

+++

It was a dark, classy looking establishment. It suited Tetsu perfectly, but the relatively cheery rock music playing over the speakers was going to drive Hyde insane. Honestly, he’d rather be in a dank, questionable joint with rough music pounding through speakers loud enough to grate his bones against each other with each pound of the bass. This atmosphere -paired with his continued frustration-, however, was only grating on his nerves.

He downed a couple shots right off the go, prompting Tetsu to clasp his hands on the bar and put on his best psychiatrist face. Hyde groaned the second he saw it, knowing he wouldn’t escape what was coming next.

“Haido, what’s wrong?”

Hyde rolled his eyes, gesturing for the bartender’s attention. “Nothin’.”

It was Tetsu’s turn to roll his eyes, watching Hyde carefully as the shorter of the two ordered himself a draft to nurse sulkily. “Wrong. Something’s been bugging you since this afternoon, and you’re gonna tell me what it is.”

Hyde scoffed, looking up from the amber liquid in his glass. “What makes you so sure?”

Tetsu didn’t reply, just eyed him with a maddeningly knowing expression from over the rim of the margarita he was sipping.

“Ugh!” Hyde slumped back in his chair, knowing Tetsu would neither speak nor blink until he got an answer from him. “You suck, Tet-chan.” He sulked at his glass for another moment, being increasingly unnerved by Tetsu’s unwavering gaze, before he spoke. “… Ken and Yukihiro, they’re a lot closer now than before, huh?”

Tetsu pursed his lips, seemingly considering whether Hyde’s question was a round about way of answering, or if it was just a ploy to change the subject. Judging by the vocalist’s uncomfortable expression, he supposed it was best to go along with it. “Yes, they’ve been hanging around with each other almost constantly for the last few months.”

“Weird.”

Tetsu shrugged, turning his gaze to the many bottles stacked in the wall of shelving behind the bar.

“And it’s always… just the two of them?”

Tetsu raised a suspicious eyebrow at him. “What are you getting at, Hyde?”

“Nothing!” He replied over-casually. “Just, they never invited you to hang out with them?”

Tetsu sighed, swirling his drink around before gulping the last of it down and setting the glass on the counter as he spoke. “No. I suspect I’m partly to blame for his new found interest in our drummer.”

“You? How?” Hyde frowned curiously; this wasn’t what he had been expecting to hear.

Tetsu nodded as he caught the bartender’s attention. “Another one please.” He turned back to Hyde. “Ken and I had a disagreement earlier in the year, I don’t imagine he’s forgotten it.”

“You and Ken??” Hyde was incredulous. “But… He seemed more or less normal around you today…”

“Did he?” Tetsu chuckled, thanking the bartender as he accepted the new drink. “Well, Ken can be a surprisingly good actor when he tries.”

Hyde mulled this over as the bassist immersed himself in his alcohol. His curiosity had been captured by the story of this mysterious disagreement, and he practically squirmed in his seat as he longed to discover just what it had been about. But judging by the look on Tetsu’s face, that conversation was long over, and Hyde would be hearing nothing else about it. He sighed, his anger had dissipated entirely and the alcohol in his nearly empty glass was no longer anywhere near as appealing as it previously had been. Tetsu clearly disagreed, however, as he moved robotically onto his third glass.

Hyde drove the wasted bassist home later that night, hauling him inside his unnervingly clean apartment and dragging him into a position tucked beneath crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. He shook his head. There was hardly a wrinkle in the cool, white, material, and he briefly entertained the thought of Tetsu ironing them as part of the routine of making his bed.

Tetsu was out cold probably before his head hit the pillow, and he snuggled under the covers with a quiet hum of appreciation. Hyde smiled, patting him atop the head before turning to leave -only to be stopped by the bassist’s hand being tangled in his shirt.

“Ken,” He mumbled, his voice almost too soft to hear “… you idiot.”

Hyde frowned, carefully loosing the bassist’s strong hold on his clothing. The sad, yet somewhat affectionate quality to his words only further confused the vocalist about the nature of their argument. Just what the hell was going on between those two?!

As he drove home his curiosity led his thoughts to the guitarist, and a new curiosity took over as he made a sudden turn down a street that didn’t lead to his own apartment, but was nearly as familiar.

It was around three in the morning, but Ken didn’t answer when he buzzed, which indicated that he hadn’t come home… Hyde frowned. Which meant… what? That he was spending the night at Yukihiro’s place? If Hyde had known the address, he was sure he would have ended up on the drummer’s doorstep too at some point before daybreak.

The irritation he’d felt before was threatening to sink back into his mood, but he just beat it off with a fresh bout of confusion. There was definitely more happening here than what he was aware of…

Argggh! Just what the hell was going on!??!
