The news about John's awakening spread like a fire and the next morning visitors (besides Sherlock, who did not care about hospital policies) were finally allowed to come.
And so they came...

At first John was touched that people were worried about him and came to see how he is doing.

He gratefully accepted Mrs. Hudson's little basket of sweets, hiding it carefully so the nurses will not see it.
Stamford brought the newest gossip from the hospital and Molly the newest gossip from the rest of the world.
Lestrade, Donovan and Anderson talked about the happenings at New Scotland Yard and about what cases they were currently engaged on.

It would have been good if not for one little circumstance:
They all stayed and did not leave.

John has not been able to eat without everyone watching his every move, he has to go to the toilet for three hours now, but as he is still too weak to stand up and as such he needs the help of the nurse.
He will not do that in front of everyone, thank you very much and his head started to pound halfway through the morning.

And the people are not even talking with him anymore, they are just sitting or standing around, talking with each other about everything and anything and only look occasionally at him if at all.
Nobody has noticed that he has not spoken a word in over an hour and even when he feigned falling asleep they did not even lower their voices.

John is a patient man (no pun intended) and he is a very patient man were a certain detective is concerned, but he has his limits, too.
And they are very low if he is sick or hurt.

The nurse walking down the hallway jumps almost three feet high in surprise when a loud bellow comes from one of the rooms and furious words are spoken loudly.
A few moments later a door opens and a group of shame-faced people spill out of it, making a beeline for the next exit.

A sudden chuckle behind her makes her spin around and the dark-haired, handsome young man most of her colleagues are complaining about, steps around her with a smirk on his lips.

"Took longer than I thought, but then Mycroft was missing," he murmurs and without knocking enters the room the other people just left.

The nurse stares for a moment longer, but then shakes her head and continues on her way.
Some things are better left unexplained.
