Title:  Eternity
Author: Alaylith
Rating: G
Characters: Watson, Holmes
Summary: Watson and Holmes share a moment of Eternity, when a beginning and an ending meet. (July Amnesty Prompt 10)
WordCount: 551
Prompt: Amnesty 10 ~~~ Alpha/Omega - write a fic in which there is a beginning of something, and an end of something.
Author's Note: This is it - the last of my fills.*sniff* I am going to miss this - it was soo much fun. But I am a little happy about it as well, because it was pretty stressful and it was very difficult and restricting to connect all these prompts. I know that the connection between most of the prompts is very small, but it was the best I could do.
This is the real end of the story and happens after Warmth. Do you miss me QUERY is some kind of a little epilogue, but can be ignored. This piece here is really intended to be the end.
And a cookie (or catnip *hint*) for those who find the little extra I included. ;)

But now it is time for me to leave the stage - I hope you enjoyed the show! *bows*

Watson sits on the small bench in front of the country house, a blanket over his legs and a glass of brandy in his hand.

He looks up to the sky and observes the glittering stars in the darkness, the moon shining softly in the middle of them.

He does not look when crunching steps near him and a short moment later the blanket is lifted and Holmes sits down beside him.

“It is a beautiful night,” Watson says and Holmes nods. “Yes, it is.”

“Us awaits a new year, my friend,” Watson muses.
“And an old one ends,” Holmes continues. “And what a year it was.”

Watson chuckles and looks at Holms. “Oh yes, it really was something else. I have to admit that I am quite happy that it is finally over. Hopefully the next year is not as crazy as this one was.”

“New Year’s Eve is the day of eternity,” Holmes says while starring at the stars. “It is the moment when something ends and at the same time begins again, like nothing else does in the world.”

Watson chuckles again. “Really, Holmes and you call me romantic!”

Holmes snorts and looks at him with twinkling eyes. “I am nothing in comparison to those awful cheap novels you like to read, doctor.”

Both share a laugh and then look up to the sky again.

“By the way, this is for you.”

Watson looks down surprised at the object in Holmes’ hand and curiously takes it into his own.

It is a silver watch, a beautiful work of piece. Watson turns it around and gasps softly as he sees the gentle inscribed words at the back of the watch. S. Holmes

Tears sting his eyes and he smiles softly. “Why does it carry your name?”
Holmes smiles gently. “Let’s just say that this way I am with you even if I am not.”

“A talisman, then. You do know that that’s just superstition?” Watson asks and looks at Holmes amused.

“Does it really matter?” Holmes shrugs. “As long as we believe it, it is not important if it’s real or not. And I believe it.”

They both smile softly and Watson finally opens the watch to look at the time. He is just able to see how all clock hands meet right before bells announce the new day.

“Happy New Year, Watson,” Holmes says, his eyes focused on the distant stars.
“Happy New Year, Holmes,” Watson answers and is just about to raise his own eyes.

But he notices something out of the corner of his eyes and turns questioningly towards the forest.

For a moment Watson could swear that he sees his Mary between the trees, a soft smile on her lips and with a small grey kitten in her arms, before the apparition disappears with a gust of snowflakes.

Watson blinks, but then smiles again and looks up to the stars like his friend does.

Everything begins and ends in this world. Sometimes it is hurtful to loose something and sometimes it is hurtful to start something new.

But it is as Holmes said - there is a touch of eternity to their life.
And with a friend like Sherlock Holmes, John Watson is willing to believe in it.

Together they will be able to handle eternity.
