Title:  Snowy Death
Author: Alaylith
Rating: G
Characters: Watson, Holmes, bad man
Summary: Holmes has to fight to protect Watson - and loses. (July Amnesty Prompt 08)
WordCount: 538
Prompt: Amnesty 08 ~~~ Natural disaster and its consequences.  Whether that's flood, hurricane, forest fire, earthquake (San Fran, 1906, anyone?), volcano, or whatever - use a natural disaster in some way.
Author's Note: This one was a DISASTER itself. ;( I started it and had it almost finished, but then I re-read the prompt and realised that I did not have a natural disaster. I had a disaster caused by a human, even though it was something natural. So I started to re-write the story, finished it again and I DID NOT SAVE IT CORRECTLY! AAAAHHHHHH! I lost the whole thing! ;_; I still had the old (wrong) version and was able to rebuilt the story (again), but sadly it did not turn out good. I hope it is acceptable as a natural disaster, I was unable to change it, because I had already planned all amnesty prompts around it (as it was visible in Buried Alive, which happens after this one, btw) and after losing the story I really had no energy to try something else. *sniff* I beg your forgiveness if it does not completely match the prompt, but I hope it is acceptable...

“It is almost poetic,” Matthews says as they watch how Watson stumbles through the snow towards their position.

“The first time you followed him through the fire. Now he follows you through the snow,” he continues and chuckles darkly. “First a fiery and now a snowy death - heat and coldness; the perfect opposites.”

He turns around and looks at Holmes, a thoughtful expression in his eyes. “Just like the two of you.”

Holmes growls and Matthews takes a few steps back. “Now I get to see how you will react to his death after all, Holmes.

You can watch him die.”

Holmes looks up horrified when Matthews starts to push against a boulder. He assumed that Matthews would wait for Watson to reach them and then shoot him, but instead Matthews wants to bury him beneath boulders and snow.

“NO!” Holmes cries and jumps forward. He grabs for the gun in Matthews’ hand and tries to pull him back from the boulder and Matthews tries to point the gun at him.

They wrestle for a few moments, before Matthews is able to punch Holmes and Holmes falls back into the snow. As he scrambles up to his feet he can only watch as Matthews pushes the boulder for a last time and the boulder starts to roll down the side into the small valley.

He crawls to the edge and looks down to Watson, who stopped on his way and stares up towards the stones barrelling towards him.

But Watson jumps to the side and avoids the boulders, which continue to roll into the valley and disappear in the snow.

Holmes sighs relieved, but looks up when Matthews swears and aims his gun at the stumbling Watson. With a furious snarl Holmes throws himself against Matthews and they roll over the snow; the gun flying a few feet away.

Holmes is finally able to get his arms around Matthews’ neck and starts to choke him. Matthews hits him a few times and Holmes adjusts his grip until he hears a satisfying crack and the body goes limp in his arms.

He pushes the corpse away from him and looks down at it for a moment, deep breathes expand his chest almost painfully.

Relief and a sense of peace fill him and he leans back for a moment to listen to the silence surrounding him.

But then a roar thunders through the air and Holmes looks up to the mountain behind him.

A giant mass of snow barrels down towards the valley, carrying trees away and destroying everything in its path.

And it rolls directly towards Watson.

He scrambles to the edge and even at this distance he can see the joy on Watson’s face as he looks up to him.

But Holmes is filled by fear and horror.

“WATSON! RUN!”

Watson immediately obeys instinctively to his shout and turns around to run even without knowing why, just recognizing the hint of panic in his voice.

On his elevated position Holmes is out of reach of the avalanche and he falls to his knees as he is only able to watch helplessly the disaster taking place in front of his eyes.

And Watson is in the middle of it.
