Title:  Siberian Tiger
Author: Alaylith
Rating: G
Characters: Watson, Holmes, bad man
Summary: Watson falls prey to an old hunter. (July Amnesty Prompt 07)
WordCount: 603
Prompt: Amnesty 07 ~~~ Playing in another sandbox.  We all have those crucial stories we've always loved and which shaped our perceptions of characters, those ones we read over and over and love just as much the hundredth time through as we did the first time.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and now's your chance to flatter someone.  Choose a fanwork (anything from published pastiche to something right here on LJ or ff.net) and write a scene inspired by it, missing from it, or in that universe.  It's fanfic of a fanfic, in other words.

However, you have ten days to complete this Amnesty, and so that's plenty of time to contact the author if it's someone on the net, and ask their permission to play in their sandbox (of course citing them when you're through playing with their toys).  If you're fanficcing a pastiche and can't contact the published author, make sure you cite the work, author, and disclaimer that the universe isn't yours and you're just borrowing.  While Holmes and Co. are in public domain, people's personal work is not; don't use something off a fanfic site without asking the author first.  This is your chance to pay tribute to those stories you've loved and learned from as a writer and a reader; only be complimentary and complementary to their universe.
Author's Note: Many, many, MANY thanks to KCS for allowing me to use one of her stories for this prompt. Generally I love all her stories, but trying to connect something with my story I remembered this scene from her story Tiger, Tiger (@ff.net as I only know it's location there, hope it's okay that I use that link). I built my fill along her original, even taking some sentences from her (but changing them a bit so they are not exact copies). I hope I did it okay and am able to honour her great story rightfully. As you can see even my title was inspired by hers. :)
I can only recommend reading KCS's story (and all her others, really), because they are really awesome! Thanks, KCS and keep going! You are one of the best. *hugs*

Totally forgot - this happens directly before Furious!

They are not far from their country house when Holmes stops and cocks his head to the side. “Did you hear that?”

“What do you mean?” asks Watson and looks around. “I heard nothing.”

Holmes continues to listen, but only the sounds of a lonely winter evening surround them.

Then Holmes fixes his eyes in the direction of their house and he taps lightly against Watson’s arm. “Stay here.”

Before Watson can say something Holmes starts forward and disappears between the trees. Watson sighs, understanding Holmes’ caution, but still thinking that it is too much.

He shakes his head a bit, when he hears a stealthy, almost unintelligible sound behind him.

He spins around, his hand automatically wandering to his pocket, but he left his gun in the house.

He stills as he sees the gun pointed straight at him and raises his eyes to look at the man he only met once before.

It is Alexander Matthews, the man who kidnapped and held him captive for several weeks and who tried to burn him and Holmes alive.

He has found them.

“It’s a while since our last meeting, Doctor,” Matthews says. “I was quite surprised to learn that you and your friend survived the fire. I was pretty confident that you would not be able to leave the house.”

“It seems that you underestimated us,” Watson says slowly and Matthews laughs with a crazy edge to his voice.

“It really seems so. But I am not going to make the same mistake twice.” He cocks his gun. “I’ve been waiting for you, Doctor. This time Holmes will only find your corpse.”

As Watson tries to think of anything to do, he hears a sound that frightens him even more than the weapon pointed at him.

“Watson? Watson! Is everything all right?”

Watson’s eyes met with Matthews’ and Matthews starts to turn and point his gun in the direction of their house.

“No!” Watson cries and Matthews stops to look at him.

“Tell him to leave, Doctor!” he hisses. “I want you - not him.”

Watson nods silently and Matthews steps silently back between the trees. Just as Watson turns around he can see Holmes appear between the trees and look at him with worry.

“I was quite taken in by the scenery, Holmes,” Watson says, desperately trying to keep his voice even. “I shall be a while longer.”

Holmes frowns, a questioning glint in his eyes. “Are you sure? We should not stay too long, it is getting rather cold.”

“Go ahead, my friend,” Watson swallows and smiles a bit when Holmes looks taken aback by this suggestion.

“Are you certain nothing is amiss, Watson?” Holmes asks and Watson can almost feel how the gun hidden in the shadows point at them.

“Quite sure, Holmes. I just remembered something old Sebastian Moran said when he last visited Baker Street. You have to relish the world around you as long as possible.”

A shadow flickers over Holmes’ eyes, but then he smiles. “Ah and this place really is beautiful. But you are right; it is way too cold for me. I’ll go ahead and start the fire.

Do not stay too long, Watson or you will get sick again.”

“Of course, old boy. I won’t be long,” Watson answers with a smile and Holmes turns around to leave.

Watson opens his mouth to say something else, but closes it and swallows the words.

Hopefully he will be able to say them later as he can already hear the crunching of snow behind him.

It is time to face this man for the final time.
