Watson sighs for the umpteenth time and stares out of the small window.

When Watson woke up he found himself in some kind of old attic without any possible way to flee. The only window is too small and too high to even reach and the door is locked. Watson is also able to hear people moving in the house; it is too risky to try and escape.

‘Holmes will find me,’ he thinks. ‘It will take some time, but he will find me. I have to be patient and just wait for him.’

But it was easier said than done; all his senses are taut and he jumps at every little noise. As soon as he settles down there is something keeping him alert and he can get no rest.

With another sigh Watson leans back against the box and closes his eyes. It takes a few moments, but then he feels like he is watched and immediately sits up again.

He looks around, but there is no one there. That is until he lowers his eyes and discovers two glowing eyes in the darkness between the boxes.

The clouds move and moonlight illuminates the attic. The glowing eyes darken and the silhouette of a small cat appears, sitting right in front of him and watching him.

Watson blinks bemused, but then smiles a bit. “Hello there, little one. Were you watching me the whole time? No wonder I could not rest.”

The cat blinks and Watson holds out one hand. “Come here, I will not harm you.”

The animal continues to watch him, its eyes extraordinary intelligent and somehow familiar, before it silently strides towards him.

Fully in the moonlight now Watson sees that the cat is completely grey and very lean. ‘It reminds me of Holmes,’ Watson thinks amused when the cat reaches his hand and nudges his head against his fingers.

“I am curious as to how you were able to get here,” Watson says lowly and strokes the cat, which begins to purr gently. “Hm, you remind me of a friend. I think I will call you Sherlock.”

Watson laughs a bit. “But don’t tell him, I do not think he would like to know that I named a cat after him.”

Sherlock looks up at him with a glance very similar to those of Holmes’ and Watson has to laugh again. But he is quite surprised when Sherlock jumps up into his lap and curls up, sleepily closing its eyes and purring softly.

Watson smiles a bit and softly caresses the warm animal in his lap. The purring is a reassuring sound and vibrates through his whole body and without any conscious thought his eyes fall shut.

Within moments Watson is asleep.
And the next morning Sherlock is gone.
