That purchase is the first sign of any hope for the Everglades in, well, maybe ever. Everything before this was... baby steps, and mostly political, which this is too but... Restoring the sheet flow from Okeechobee is a REAL step in restoring the river. Which means I don't believe it will happen. But hey! It might!

of course, there is just that little issue of that 1.7 billion price tag for a state facing its worst budget crisis in history.

Well, naturally. But restoring the Everglades to it's traditional state as a river, not a dying swamp, will help with a variety of environmental crisis effecting all of South Florida, and thus the entire state - it is also significantly less than the projected cost for this purchase has been suggested as. If they do what they are supposed to (and, I believe, ordered by Congress to do at least once in the past, possibly several times) actually do the restoration work, the long term savings will more than justify the current outlay. They were having some outstanding results in other restoration projects while I worked for the South Florida Water Management District, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one.
