This actually reminds me of a blog post I read a few weeks back that caused quite a stir in the Star Wars community. The author proposes (with tongue quite firmly in cheek - a fact that completely passed many fans by), that real Star Wars fans actually HATE Star Wars. He suggests that whilst many of us love the idea of Star Wars, we hate some if not most of the implementation. It doesn't matter what Lucas and co do with the Star Wars universe, it's not what we would have done.
After reading it I wholeheartedly agreed with his argument and I find I can equally apply it to Doctor WHO, Star Trek, Warhammer, Robotech religion - anything with a sizeable canon really.
I can't help feeling that this is where much of the negativity comes from.

Also, That was meant to be Robotech and religion. Not Robotech religion - though reading through some of the posts by the scary people at Robotech.com one does actually wonder...

Thankfully, despite writing for an anime magazine (And not actually watching much prior to that...ssshhhh) I have yet to fall foul of Robotech zealots.
Now Who zealots? They've jumped up and down on me a fair old bit:)
