1. Servalan is not really an authoritarian -- she doesn't support the government because she believes in it, or because she believes in tradition, or because she believes authority should be obeyed just because it's authority. Rather she is part of the government because she doesn't think there's any way to fight it, that there's no point bucking the system, and so you might as well achieve as much power as you can by working within it. Certainly she has been willing to fight institutional sexism and buck traditions all throughout her rise to power, and in fact one of the reasons she is where she is is her creative willingness to ignore how things are "always" done in favor of innovating new ways to do them. But you can't actually give the masses freedom, because they don't want it and wouldn't know how to keep it, so you may as well support a system that allows a small privileged few to rise to power, as long as you can be one of that few ( ... )
