Visiting as a Guest Speaker

I had the privilege yesterday of visiting Dona Cady's science fiction course at Middlesex Community College. The class sounds like something I would have loved to take as an undergrad: they study the hero's journey, talk about myth and literature, read a lot of really excellent books, watch some great movies, and are required to play Warhammer as ( Read more... )

cowboys and aliens, joseph campbell, mythology, living forgotten realms, devon monk, browncoats

Huh. I'd like to see that virtual worlds/Asian phil paper also -- not sure I agree with the slugline premise, but that's what a full paper is for.

Way to go on the guest lecturing gig, though! Sounds like that class has a lot going for it. Playing with WoW as a component of the hero's journey also sounds fascinating, partly because one of the reasons I've never gotten into Massmogs, and could never full-on devote myself to MUDs (their logical predecessors) is that they have the images of the hero's journey without any actual journey. Psychological journey here, of course - don't get me wrong, there's a ton of running from one place to another in most Massmogs. Writing might be a way to break that open.

Thoughts on online presence later. Running to not be late to translation gig now.

I didn't know you were an EN Worlder, although in retrospect I'm not surprised. Did I tell you about my story hour?

Lump me in the pile of folks that want to read that paper when it is published- interesting hook.

Also, I would kill to go to a lecture by you. I'd even do the pre-class reading. (Unheard of in my undergraduate days!)
