Has the hard drive failed or is it failing? If it's failing, then take it out, put it in a ziploc bag and freeze it for a day or so. Then put it in an external HD adaptor and run it off a working machine - it should give you about 20 minutes of life to back up all your essential stuff.

Worked for me when my lappy died last year. Just, the more you try to boot off a damaged hard drive, the less likely you'll be able to recover anything, and opening the back of a laptop usually voids the warranty.

Good luck!

AFAICT, it's entirely gone. Like, instantly. One minute I was drawing in Photoshop and chatting on AIM, the next it's making clicking noises and has frozen up, and when I turn it off and turn it back on again it gives me a flashy ? folder on a grey screen, which is apparently Mac for "where the hell is the OS? I sure as hell can't find it!"

How old is it? Still in warranty? If not, I still recommend doing the freeze trick - detailed stuff here.

If there's super important stuff on there, you can't beat professional help, but depending on how seriously your hard drive has broken itself, specialists can charge up to a couple thousand dollars for data recovery.

I got it for my birthday. In November. From my aunt who works at Apple. Soooo under warranty still, and we're taking it into the macstore downtown.

But all that doesn't make me happier. Because fuck it was so new I was backing up other things ONTO IT, not backing up the things on it. (Nooooooo Homestuck vol. 5 I don't know if I can pay another fifteen dollars to buy you again) (nooooooooooooooooo all the art I did yesterday that only has small versions uploaded to the internet ;__________; )

Given my long, long history with computer problems, I can tell you that if it's not the hard drive itself causing the problems it might be salvageable.

Granted I have no idea what's going on with your machine but all hope might not be lost.

Mine died too, and I harvested the hard drive from it, just long enough to back all the stuff that was on it, onto an external...would that be a viable option for you too? @_@;;

I'm really sorry to hear that. I wish I had Mac experience to be able to tell you what to do. :[ All I can say is either follow everyone else's advice with the hard drive or take it somewhere for professional help.
