dormantdragon made a thought-provoking post recently to her LJ about spirituality, religion, the afterlife and so on here.

Here is the rambling verbiage I produced in response:

When we talk about something, it forces us to formulate thoughts coherently in our minds before speaking

You don't know a lot of the people I do :)

I've found that, in discussing religion especially, people don't actually know what they believe, until it's in the middle of a discussion.

I have great respect for people who have thought through their beliefs, come to a conclusion, and are willing to back it up. No problems if the person disagrees with me, I expect that to happen from time to time :).

But, so many people believe something so unquestioningly, that they have no idea what they really believe in, or why. Questioning that, pushing to find out the real truth, is effectively questioning their faith - and that makes people defensive.
