I haven't read the source article yet - bit busy at present; just back from Easter holds and working on catch-up - but I love the Economist quote at the end of your rant.

Someone on my flist (who I think is basically there as a hangover from the whole misconceived "LJ games" experiment) posted a "nekkid cyclist" "glamour" photograph, and I must confess I had a moment of "what's V. Pendleton been up to now?" cognitive dissonance.
You may have noticed that I was. :) Good to see you again, albeit rather fleetingly! We must have been gaming out-of-synch with each other a large portion of the weekend...
