Watched a report on the BBC News channel last night about "bride kidnapping" and the like in Chechnya, which was pretty unrelentingly grim and horrific (branching out as it apparently often does into rape and murder).  Perhaps the lowlight, however, was a brief interview with Ramzan Kadyrov, the Putin-backed ex-rebel president, which was startling ( Read more... )

Russia is a very scary place! Some could see this coming when the US championed Yeltsin so stupidly and enthusiastically in his first proper election. Since then it has not got any better, especially for women, freethinkers and minorities.

Judaism is SHIT for women but to be fair it is not alone in this. It is truly sad to see intelligent people and particularly intelligent women struggling to rationalize the conflict between humane, or rational or even practical behaviour and their religious tenets (or hell even social tenets at times).
