What I really miss about transit is all the free *time* it gave me. It takes me an hour and a half to get to my somewhat-weekly board games outing. Virtually all of that is on the interstate, which means I get to duck cops, curse at annoying drivers, dodge massive trucks, and listen to BBC podcasts. What I don't get to do is read. Or close my eyes for a few minutes.
On the other hand, I couldn't hit half a dozen stores on that same trip, but I suspect the much more transit- and pedestrian-friendly Toronto wouldn't present as big of a challenge in that respect.
Sounds like a no-brainer. Totally do it, especially if you are biking to work. If you really, REALLY want to do the bous thing later you can always borrow it back since it's not leaving the family...
I'm biased, but there's another thing that can make it an easier decision. For occasional I-need-a-car things that aren't multiple days and long distance, there's AutoShare and ZipCar. (I'm involved in our local car-sharing co-op.)

I'm getting a car you need to get rid of yours to make me feel better.
